What is the difference then any other POI discussed here locard? Want to solve this case or just talk about events of the past?
Awareness of his POI and any other POI is very important to at least trying to solve this case. Many others have gone through the same process and dried up as dead ends but eventually we will hit the right one, dead or alive.
1. Quester's current POI is going to be resolved. DNA is being sought, so us looking at pictures and speculating on specific details about his life isn't going to help anything at this point. Quester was seeking him out regardless of our talking about him -- so your "trying to solve the case" argument rings hollow on that point. That speculation was fun and *possibly* worthwhile in the early days, but now...what's the point? It's on track to be resolved definitively.
2. A lot of people on these boards develop POIs, and most of them NEVER mention anything overly specific about them. Why? Because crowdsourcing out in the open on a public board is usually a bad idea, especially if the POI is still alive. When the POI is dead, even then, the smarter posters take care with details and pictures being made public. And when the crowdsourcing does happen in the open, I don't see much help happening. I see a lot of gawking and "oh wow, he looks like __x____ composite." Unless I'm missing some great examples, I think you're overstating your case.
And, wow, false dilemma much? "Want to solve the case or just talk about events of the past?" I have no illusions that I will solve the case. I don't have the skill set (and neither do about 85% of the people posting here). There are other ways people can contribute, and some of those, yes, involving talking about the past. I strongly dislike the "but how are you helping to solve the case?" move because it strikes me as a cheap and unearned position of superiority.
Basically, there are smart, careful, and respectful ways of talking about POIs (all of whom so far have turned out innocent). I've seen it happen. What was trying to happen earlier in this thread was just gawking, nothing more. I don't see the point of defending that.
