I think, like the late writer Michelle McNamara and her youtube interview with the LA Magazine editor www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWKRSD_K5aA, that it's very plausible that there was some truth to EAR's claims to victims that he needed money for his van and he was living out of his van. Part of it was a ruse to gain victims' compliance. But part of it seems to be very plausible given the other descriptions about him.
It was very common in the 1970's for people to live off the grid, including college-educated people, in vans and other non-traditional housing.
He could have had a van parked somewhere else and used junker cars to leave the crime scenes and get back to his van. Vans were very popular in the 1970's and in California, including Northern California.
