There's been some interest about the clothesline woven around the hallway in the attack on El Segundo in another thread, so I thought I'd post some context for that by posting some attack information.
I've combed through the available details to the best of my ability and tried to reconstruct the narrative. I haven't checked for spelling or grammar
October 9th, 1976 4:30 AM to 5:30 AM
Victim: 19 year-old woman
Location: El Segundo, Rancho Cordova
This attack occurred fairly close to attacks #1 and #3, on a fairly short street called El Segundo, which runs parallel to Paseo Drive where the first attack occurred. It also runs right into Malaga Way where the third attack occurred. Five hundred feet to the northeast is the infamous Dawes and Dolcetto intersection.
PRE-ATTACK EVENTS
March 7th, 1973
The victim was living with her family on Dawes, when they suffered an EAR-style break-in at their home. A wine bottle full of coins and a ring was stolen. It’s unknown if this has anything to do with the East Area Rapist, but given the fact that this girl was later a victim, and that only coins and single earrings were stolen (both of those are EAR hallmarks), it’s possible.
Somewhere around October 4th, 1976
A neighbor on the southern part of El Segundo had a prowler in her backyard.
October 9th, 1976 3:30 AM
A neighbor’s dog began to bark.
THE ATTACK
The victim went to sleep around midnight. Sometime around 4:30 AM, she heard someone whispering her name. She started to stir and as she did, a gloved hand clamped over her mouth. She felt something sharp jab into the top of her shoulder, near her neck.
“Don’t scream or I’ll kill you,” the intruder hissed at her.
He forcefully turned her over onto her stomach and pulled her arms back. “Shut up or I’ll kill you,” he told her as he tied her wrists tightly with shoelaces. He wrapped some cloth around her eyes for a blindfold and shoved cloth into her mouth to gag her. He tied a piece of towel around her head to hold it in place.
He demanded money, telling her that he needed a “fix”. “Better have money,” he warned her. He told her that he’d kill her if she screamed. He then stood next to her, breathing in short, rapid breaths.
“Get up,” he hissed at her. He pulled her up, grabbed her arm, and led her down the hallway. He told her to duck down at various times and he wove her through the hallway, and she occasionally felt something like rope scrape against her back.
He pushed her onto the patio outside, told her to lay down, and positioned her on her back against a rug. He whispered loudly in her ear that he’d been dreaming about her and had “always wanted to * her”, and then he bound her feet together. She heard him leave her side and go back into the house, then heard him come back. He was walking around in the backyard.
Then he went back into the house and came out again. He asked her for money once more, and repeated to her that he “needed a fix”. “Better have money,” he warned again. Then he went back into the house.
When he returned, he stood next to her very closely. She could hear him breathing still in those short, rapid breaths. She then heard him start to masturbate.
After a moment, he leaned down and she felt something very sharp against her skin. “You better let me do this,” he hissed at her.
He turned her over and straddled her, and put his penis in her bound hands. He moved back and forth a few times. He turned her over once more, unbound her feet, put her legs up in the air, and rested them on his shoulders. Then he entered her for a short time. He climaxed inside.
He went into the house for a little while, came back out, and entered her again. He then put his penis in her hands again and moved back and forth, telling her again to “play with it”. He entered her for a third time, and climaxed inside of her again.
He got up, and she heard him move to the other side of the yard. She could hear him putting something into a paper bag. He might have entered the house and carried out additional paper bags, as well.
The assailant tied her feet and pulled the rug (with her on top of it) to a post on the patio and tied her to it. He took the rings off of her fingers and told her not to scream after he left, because he lived just down the street and would come back and kill her.
She didn’t hear him open the gate, but she figured he must have left shortly thereafter.
IMMEDIATE AFTERMATH
She waited until she was sure that he was gone, and then she started trying to struggle free. She was able to get her gag and her blindfold removed, and worked her way free from the post. Her hands, bound behind her very tightly, wouldn’t shake free. She hopped into the house to use the phone to call for help, but the lines on both phones had been cut. She gave up and waited for a very long time. Her friend arrived about two hours later.
When her friend arrived, they went to the friend’s house where the victim showered. The friend called the police while the victim cleaned up. LE got the call around 9:00 AM.
The police arrived and processed the scene. They were able to determine that the method of entry was the dining room window. The screen had been removed and was leaning against a bush, and there was a candy dish on the ground. The intruder had reached in and removed it prior to entering. The sliding door at the back patio was still open, as was the side gate. The patio still had the rug, the rope tied to the post, and also had a knotted strip of towel. More torn strips of towel were found on the victim’s bed, along with some white shoelaces. The victim’s bedroom had been ransacked and drawers had been emptied onto the floor. The kitchen had also been ransacked extensively.
The most interesting thing that they had found was the unique “cat’s cradle” style “alarm system” that the assailant had rigged up in the house before even waking up the victim. Clothesline taken from the victim's backyard was stretched tightly throughout the house, intricately woven from doorknob to doorknob to both keep them shut and trip up anyone who might enter the house. The rope started on the master bedroom door, then stretched over to the brother’s bedroom door where it was tied. Then it went to the victim’s bedroom door and to the kitchen, then stretched to the bathroom in the hall and was secured to the bathroom faucets. The way it was woven indicated that he knew which bedroom belonged to the victim.
In addition to the rings he stole from her fingers, the assailant also stole three single earrings from the scene.
The victim, accompanied by her friend, was taken to Sacramento Medical Center.
SUSPECT DESCRIPTION
The victim never got a good look at her assailant. She felt he was probably white, and about twenty-five years old. He was wearing a ski mask. She got a good look at his him below the knees, describing black, square-toed patent-leather shoes.
His voice sounded like an adult’s, and he spoke in an angry, forced whisper.
