I hesitate to call it anything complimentary, but his ability to mix in (some repeated, some isolated) red herrings along with his MO staples was remarkable.
I like to keep in mind that he had a signature set that he needed in order to get his disgusting fix with these crimes. There was no real hiding the MO and signature in this string. And I think he knew that, and knew it would be difficult to keep LE from linking those. But those are the compulsive things he needed to make this worth his while. So his initial move was to throw out a lot of red herrings, false clues, repeated lies, and confusing rhetoric. It is my opinion that this allowed him to act out his sickness and compulsion knowing they would be linked, but put so much misinformation in the mix that he felt insulated and protected.
Interestingly, this feeling of protection might have seemed to fade for him, and perhaps he put distance into the equation in order to try to take advantage of multiple jurisdictions not communicating and thus not linking his crimes - Modesto, Stockton, San Jose, Walnut Creek, San Ramon, etc.. Obviously, that wasn't foolproof, either, but it does speak to a possible purpose of intention.
So did he have a van? A camp by the river? Was he a junkie? Did he stutter? Did he have an apartment with many TVs? Did he have an Asian accent? How about a Spanish one? Did his "main man" want gold and silver? If it was on the news, was he going to kill someone or was he going to kill someone if it WASN'T on the news? Did something happen to his face? Was he kicked out of the Air Force? Was he in the Army? Did he see victims at the prom? How about at the lake?
A hastily bent spoon seems to me to be yet another plant, although a stupid one if it was not burned, to suggest he was something he was not - a junkie. And, at a minimum, if only found by the victims, a reminder that he was there.
