As we know from some cases, police dogs howl reaction to EARs scent indicates he was a heavy drug user or somehow mentally ill (or both).
Now there's something struggling me. There was a young guy in our town (now he's in prison) who is a heavy drug user. He is a very violent and aggressive person (beats his girlfriend even in public, provoking, fighting strangers and actually anybody). Because we have a friend in common we "met" each other every now and then. And on one occasion she blamed him for being insulting customers on her shop the evening before. But his reaction was that he isn't able to remember anything of that incident. And I got the feeling he was saying the truth.
A few days ago I was reading about a prominent case in our region that is about another young man brutally kicking a random woman. While on trial he said he can't remember anything of his deed (maybe a lie, maybe not).
Now it came into my mind the same could have happened to EAR. Maybe in some way. His brain might have been damaged like with all heavy drug users and what he did while under the influence of drugs wasn't up to his recollection when he wasn't high anymore (if there was ever a time he wasn't high in general). He lived that violent life only when he was on drugs. Hence he probably still lives today not knowing what he did. Maybe there are just some schemes but he can't organize or interpret these fragments.
In addition: His 5 year break could mean he was clean for he was in treatment to get rid of drugs (maybe as some governmental order or as expectation of a family member). But then in 1986 he became weak and ingested drugs again and his urges and deep fantasies evoked.
What'd you think about my theory?
