Sexual assault statistics like those I found at www.RAINN.org (when I did some superficial googling) show that the majority of sexual assaults are not reported to the police (only 344 out of every 1000 sexual assaults are reported to police). A lot of the reasons for this were even more pertinent in the late '70s such as fear of retaliation, police would/could do nothing etc so surely there are potentially a lot of victims out there who never came forward?
Even when you take in to consideration his stranger status (70% of sexual assault survivors know their attacker) and that these were violent crimes involving bindings and home invasion I still think it's highly likely that there are / were women who have not come forward with potential for new leads and information.
I am interested if people think targeting these potential witnesses would help further the investigation and also if any one knows if any of the linked attacks were from victims that came forward at a later date?
If he committed 50 known rapes the above statistic would indicate there could be 145 unreported attacks. I'm extrapolating national statistics on sexual assault to one case, essentially meaningless I know, but it certainly points a big finger at there being a handful at least of people with potential information on the EARONS.
Fear and intimidation were a big factor in his attacks and it seems, to me, that it's highly likely that some victims would've not wanted to contact police or tell their partners / families for a whole range of reasons aside from reporting on an attacker that was still out there assaulting at will.
Usual apologies if this has been covered.
