I really do think to much is being made on his intelligence etc. Committing and getting away with crime/s really isn't that difficult. Especially in the era of the Ear.
The ruses he uses are also very common amongst any burglar that isn't a full on junky. Some of them are actually quite cringe worthy they are so obvious.
Swishing alcohol around your mouth but not drinking, fake cigarette butts.
I think a lot of people think these things are extraordinary because they haven't been involved in crime themselves. So if you live a normal life of working 9-5 and needing a schedule maybe it does seem crazy but it isn't.
Being completely brazen is a necessity for crime.
Being in someone's house and just being there and looking through stuff without even taking things can be fun. Maybe not to everyone but to certain people.
Also. He stole plenty of sellable things, lots of money (I believe relatively to him) and I'll be certain he took drugs from people more that just the one woman with her cocaine. I'm sure people didn't want to tell the cops oh yeah I had a load of coke and now it's gone.
I still believe he was a kid/young adult middle class living at home with dad away working lots and mum left as a child.
Good at sports and average student but just never manages to cut it at anything and a bit weird (not major but not connecting properly with peers)
Lots of free time after dropping out of school/uni, no real
Close friends, dates but no girlfriends.
Gets his kicks by getting one over on all the kinds of people who said he was a loser or wouldn't amount to anything by breaking into their homes and toying with them and then as with all criminals. Escalating until captured or dying.
He's a recidivist so if he's alive he's doing something. You can't ever turn that stuff off. He will be doing something. Maybe not on the abhorrent level of ear or ons but something. It's a part of who he is.
Ramble over.
I think he's a lot more intelligent than people think. To be that precise in planning and execution you can't be an idiot. Doesn't mean he's a rocket scientist, but damn, yeah he's pretty sharp for sure.
Part of me thinks he moved to Sacramento shortly before the crimes, and then part of me thinks nope, to know that much about the in's and out's of neighborhoods you've gotta be native to the area.
I think there is way too many scenarios of him "just barely eluding" authorities to not think that he had more help than we imagine. Although he was maybe the only one committing the crimes I think he definitely had people helping him. Who that would be, I have no clue.
Just don't know how he managed to escape so many situations where he was so close to getting caught. There is a thing called "odds" and they were always on his side. That just doesn't sit right with me.
Wasn't it not his "luck" or his "odds" but, the fumbling of LE at the time? It seems the perp got "away" with these crimes because of the missed oppitunities that the law had. There are many according to the facts.
Also, there was the same type of crimes going on throughout the region(s). I'm sure LE was over whelmed, under staffed, and under trained, and the technology at the time was just a two way radio!
Because this perp's area(s) was first country settings, and quickly became residential settings, the communities could not catch up, or were not able to absorb the impact of change quick enough. The influx of families, and individuals from all over the usa, and foreign lands flocking to Califoria for fun, sun and job opportunities was immense in the 70's.
So to "blame" others, or give the "perp" fame for eluding LE is unfair.
No one knows the full facts of all the circumstances and the social environment of that period, time or events. We only know, and understand what has happen to us. We have a narrow veiw of understanding how life at this time unfolded, happened, and "really, truly was" during this period.
Most people compare life today, with California during these crimes (70's and early 80's), which is not the fact, just fictional. People, and LE were not as "intense" about their positions, self, and views as they are today. I hope this makes some sense, because my writting is not as fluid, and auesome as some other posters.
