For those of you who think he wouldn't change his M.O. in a new jurisdiction, are you forgetting the major difference in M.O. from EAR to ONS? He stayed one step ahead of LE at all times, this is one of the reasons why. If he committed 2 murders within a week of each other in 2 different states with the exact same M.O., LE would have a much smaller suspect pool, because of the fact he would have to take a plane.
Has Dexter, or anyone else, laid out a timeline of where this guy was from '76-'86?
Other than the killing, his MO remained pretty much identical to what he had developed in Sacramento, brought to Modesto, Stockton, and CCC, and what he stuck with in the aborted attack on H/H in Goleta. There is no reason to believe he changed his MO when he became a killer, and there is strong evidence he stuck to his usual script. And why not? It worked very well for him.
*Edit: I should probably add this for Dexter's benefit. A lot of members with POIs they were certain were the EAR/ONS have come and gone from this board over the years. We are all eager to hear what you have to say and learn more about your POI and why you think he is EAR/ONS, but please keep in mind that some POIs who seemed perfect in every way have been excluded by LE. I think it would help you to go back through the board and read some of the popular threads, especially those about POIs. I know that you believe 100% that your POI is the guy, and you aren't alone in believing your guy is THE guy. But individuals who have joined this board certain of a POI and unwilling to consider other possibilities, and who have lashed out at those who asked them tough questions often haven't lasted long here. I'm not saying that you are doing that, but it's happened before and I don't want that to happen with you because I think your slething skills could be a major asset to this community.
I think it's great that you have come here, joined, and are sharing this information with the community. But you have to remember that this board is filled with members who have been researching this case for a decade or more. Many have had POIs they were certain about only to learn that they were cleared. Take the opportunity to learn from this board, to research, and allow yourself to believe in the possibility that your guy might not be THE guy. And even if he isn't, you can still be an important contributor to the board. Your guy may be EAR/ONS, or maybe just a really bad guy. I think that if you read through past threads, it will be instructive to see the experiences of other members who were 100% certain of a POI and would not accept other possibilities.
