So IMO the "he borrowed the dog" theory as unlikely as that sounds is still the best theory on the woofy mystery. I cannot get behind the idea that he used the pet of a relative or friends. He wasnt that dumb.
Posters always remember the "3-toed German Shepherd" part of the story (which may or may not be true). But posters almost always forget the 19 month separation in time part (which is a known fact).
A dog was present at the O/M murder scene. Then, 19 months later, a dog was present at the D/S murder scene.
The "he borrowed the dog" theory would thus have to hold up twice, not just once, and separated in time by 19 months.
It is much more likely that he owned the dog. It was not a stray. He did not borrow it. But posters do not want to accept that, because to do so would contradict their perception that the guy was just like every generic criminal (Ridgway, Bundy, Rader, Keyes, Kemper, Ramirez ...). What known serial killer takes a dog with him to a murder? No one. Yet, here it is, the evidence saying that a dog was present at the O/M murder scene. Then, 19 months later, a dog is present at the D/S murder scene.
Since posters' perception of the ONS is that he was just another Ridgway, Bundy, Rader, Keyes, Kemper, Ramirez, posters, like the local LE, will downplay the dog issue. It was thus easy for LE to say the dog is a dead end, simply because no LE has ever been confronted by a murder scene at which the killer brought along an animal. Must be an "urban legend"; "well okay, so he had a dog, must have been a stray", and on and on.
To say it was "dumb" to bring along an animal also contradicts the fact that the guy got away with it. From a tactical point of view, it wasn't "dumb" at all. The guy succeeded. Yet, we can't fathom a criminal bringing a dog to a murder, so we dismiss or downplay the idea ...
There's a lot of poster denial about this case. And the two dog incidents, separated in time by 19 months, are part of that denial.

I tend to dismiss the dog evidence, but if he did bring a dog it probably wasn't his. I regularly look after the dogs of two different friends when required. I do this when my friends are on vacation, in hospital etc. I don't think it completely unheard of that people can "borrow" a dog 19 months apart.
