Daniel William Marsh, the onetime boy hero who saved his father’s life and was giving an award to doing so when his father suffered a heart attack while driving a car is also a young offender who committed an unthinkable crime. Yolo Superior Court Judge David W. Reed a man I actually know and respect stated “The murders, in this case, were brutal, the victims were random. He tortured them and took pleasure in what he had done. He told his friends. He slaughtered Northup and Maupin out of morbid curiosity,” Reed said.
Daniel was 15 years old when in the predawn hours of April 14, 2013, he dressed in black, donned a shoplifted ski mask, grabbed a hunting knife and set out into the dark, breaking into the home of Northup and Maupin. Marsh stabbed the pair in their bedroom as they awakened, and tortured, then mutilated the couple in a crime so savage that jurors at his murder trial were moved to tears and that prosecutors called it the most heinous they had seen.
“I’ve been a prosecutor for 28 years, and never have I seen a defendant with such an evil soul,” said Michael Cabral, Yolo County assistant chief deputy district attorney and lead prosecutor on the case.
Daniel is now 20 years old and he was sentenced when 17 to 52 years to life for brutally murdering an elderly couple in their south Davis home last year.
I spoke to this younger offender on several occasions prior to this crime before it was discovered what was happening inside his mind. I also spoke to Daniel after his crime and he told me daydreamed of torture and murder and stabbing people nearly every waking moment. An example of compulsive behavior and how the "mind movie" takes over the everyday life of an offender much as I believe it did in EAR as he started his crime series. For Daniel it was torture for EAR is was sexual assault combined with terror he felt the victims owed him.
I am able now to post on this case with enough time passing as to not taint the appeals process. I have had to hold back this post every time I see someone posting things like a teenager could not or would not be able to plan and execute a complicated plan by dressing in dark clothing placing a mask over their head and slipping into a home and rape a woman or take a family by surprise. Daniel had planned this for a very long time he had lived in this neighborhood almost 2 years before the crime and his family had moved to a new home in Davis. He developed a plan with escape routes and entry method from surveillance before slipping into this house and mutilating these two people. I can not begin to describe this crime scene the violence was beyond anything I had ever seen before and since. He was very planned and organized and calculating. There was another like him EAR. I still see things I saw and the statements Daniel made to me will most likely be with me forever. Daniel is not the only teenager that has or will commit these heinous types of crimes and I believe there are similarities in him and young EAR. EAR was not fond of the knife as a weapon like Daniel but he chooses to bludgeon later on his development Daniel went straight to killing.
I can tell you this LE would not have caught him had he not told his GF about this crime. He had gone on with his life in a normal fashion afterward. LE had nothing to contact him until after he confessed and then the case was brought together. If he had been like EAR and not told someone he could completely trust he would not have been caught. I am sure of that and he would have done it again he told me he would and I believe him 100 %. EAR was very similar in my opinion of course. The eerie part of this whole thing is an LE Officer with 30 years on talked to Daniel two days before the attack at for having a knife on him at school and he had zero feelings anything was wrong with him this shows how an offender is secretive and able to act normal when confronted about anything. Daniel also fooled me I had no idea what he was thinking about or he was going to do this crime.
I may write a book about Daniel after my evidence-based book on EAR and its investigation as it relates to the Rancho crimes only.
