Possible GSK Murders in Orange County

And this was ironically printed the very same day...doesn't mean anything I just thought it framed that year or so up nicely in Irvine (one of the safest cities in the country).

Murder and rape charges have been dismissed against a man who was arrested

last year for the slaying of an 18-year-old Irvine woman.

Central Municipal Court Judge C. Robert Jameson dismissed the charges

against Gregory Jesus Gonzalez on Friday after results of blood and semen tests

excluded him as the woman's attacker.

Authorities believe that the same person or persons who raped Janelle Lisa

Cruz also killed her.

Gonzalez, 21, of Garden Grove, was charged with raping and bludgeoning Cruz

on May 5 at her mother's home in Irvine's Northwood Village. A real-estate agent

discovered Cruz's nude body while showing a prospective buyer the home.

Gonzalez, who has been held in the Orange County Jail for the past eight

months, was arrested for the murder after he twice confessed to the crime to an

acquaintance. The District Attorney's Office initially was seeking the death

penalty against Gonzalez.

Deputy District Attorney Rick King said Gonzalez later recanted both

confessions.

Defense attorney George Peters said his client made the confessions because

he has emotional problems. King told the judge that Gonzalez has spent time in a

mental institution and that he met the victim there. Peters said both Gonzalez

and the victim were being counseled for emotional problems but had not seen

each other in a few years at the time of Cruz's death.

Gonzalez still faces charges of assault and burglary in connection with an attack

against a former girlfriend that occurred the night before Cruz was killed, King

said.

He remains in jail on $25,000 bail.

Turns out the above individual who is not mentioned by name (E. Yale Loop) burglar who was fired on in the above March 1987 article is alive and well in another state and would almost certainly have his DNA matched at this point. He moved on to ATM machines....not exactly a master criminal.

This is actually San Diego County, not OC. I believe that Larry Pool said that they exhausted every burglar shot and killed while breaking in to a home after 1986, but I wonder how easy a dead man with no checked DNA could slip between the cracks. This guy was 36 in 1988 and was a parolee from Vacaville. There must be a lot of these burglar shootings every year, although I'm sure many don't die.  A Sacramento or Bay area perp could be sent to one of Vacaville's 2 state prisons, notably Salono, and I believe that one of them has (or had) a psychiatric aspect to it.

The Foster bludgeon murder was not attributed to Parker the Bedroom Basher.  It remains another unsolved Orange County bludgeoning.  The UC Irvine connection is interesting.

I need to respond to this thread. I know the family of Diane Brown, who was found dismembered back in 1981. It was never solved and nothing happened. I would love to see this solved. She has a twin sister that was devasted by this murder.

Were there ever any theories developed?


Jan. 28, 1981

The torso of Diane Brown was found in a trash bag in the south Chino area. Her head was found about a third of a mile away. Her legs had been found 10 days earlier in a trash bag near Summit and East avenues in Rancho Cucamonga.

Investigators said Ms. Brown telephoned a friend, stating she had been picked up while hitch-hiking and was in Pomona with a couple of guys. She was never heard from again, investigators said.

Faced with the murders of seven women and attacks on another four, six police departments and the Sheriff’s Department will meet today with the aim of organizing a task force to investigate the crimes.

The cases, which date back more than two years, are similar in some aspects. The victims were mostly young women, they were alone at the time of the attack and they were severely beaten with some sort of blunt instrument. Not all of the attacks follow the pattern exactly, but even those cases with dissimilarities will be reviewed by officers from Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Irvine, Garden Grove, Fountain Valley, Tustin, and the Sheriff’s Department. The most recent case involved a 24-year-old Tustin woman, Debra Jean Kennedy, whose body was found Sunday night in a house she shared with her sister. Investigators said she was killed by a blow to the head. This attack followed by one week an assault on another Tustin woman, 20-year-old Diana Green. Mrs. Green survived the attack and is critical condition, but her unborn baby died.

The cases to be reviewed at today’s meeting include:
—Jane Bennington, 29, who was killed in her Newport Beach apartment in August 1977.
—Patricia Neufeld, 34, who was beaten to death in her Garden Grove home on Nov. 22, 1978.
—Joan Anderson, 28, who was beaten to death last March 7 while she was home alone in Fountain Valley.
—Kimberley Rawlins, 21, whose body was discovered by her roommate in their Costa Mesa apartment, April 1.
—Savannah Anderson, 22, who was killed on May 14 at her apartment in Irvine.
—Marolyn Carleton, 34, who was found dead Sept 14 by her 9-year-old son in their Costa Mesa apartment.

In addition to Mrs. Green in Tustin, the victims who survived attacks live in Irvine, Costa Mesa and Santa Ana Heights.

Only one of the survivors, the woman in Irvine, has been able to help police. She described her attacker as a 5-foot-10 while male in his 20s with a slender build and medium-length blond hair.

The four Costa Mesa attacks, plus one that occurred there in 1977 but is not believed related to the others, happened within a four block area.

I was about to start a new thread about this case before realizing Truthy had spotted the same issue back in 2013.

Elsewhere in the thread poster "Slumbergirl" says the Irvine bludgeoning attack occurred on January 1 1979 but I am not sure this is correct.  The composite and description are from an article published on 13 October 1979, which reports the Irvine attack as happening on September 23 (a week before the failed Goleta attack).

If there is a possibility that the September 23 attack could be EAR/ONS then perhaps it might alter the common view that his decision to escalate to murder was due to the Danville and Goleta failures?  Perhaps the move to SoCal in itself marked the decision point to switch to murdering his victims and, as happened with the rapes, he started first (but fortunately failed) with a single female?
