A woman's body found burned in a Dumpster has frustrated a Sacramento police investigator, who is asking for the public's help.
Firefighters discovered the charred remains of a young woman in the metal garbage container along 18th Avenue, near Power Inn Road, about 5 a.m. June 29.
Since then Sgt. Rich Gardella and other detectives have spent hours trying to identify the woman and learn how she died. But answers have been hard to come by.
"It is truly a mystery," Gardella said. "I have to believe that there is someone out there that is missing her. But we have not been able to determine who she is."
Gardella said Thursday he is looking for information about a 1970s Datsun 240Z or 260Z. The orange car with primer-gray fender was seen southbound on Power Inn Road moments before the fire was spotted, he said.
"We have no idea if this car was involved or not," he said, "but it's the best lead we got."
Little is known of the woman. She appears to have been in her late teens or early 20s, about 5 feet tall, with a thin build. She was nude with no jewelry and no identifying marks.
She had no obvious wounds, and toxicology tests are being conducted.
Besides Sacramento's homicide and missing persons detectives, the case is being investigated by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office, the California Department of Justice and arson investigators.
Employees of the business that uses the Dumpster were questioned and cleared, Gardella said.
A forensic investigator specializing in teeth was flown in from Oklahoma to make dental impressions. They have been compared with dental records of missing persons, but so far there has been no match, Gardella said.
"We would really like to find out who this woman is," he said.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP or (800) AA-CRIME.
