I disagree with your assessment of EAR.
I don't think that EAR was some loser. I think he was from an upper-middle class, highly educated family, that his parents were educated and disciplined, and that he learned many of his disciplined traits from them. He just misapplied them to the criminal realm.
I think that EAR was college-educated and quite successful in his business life. Ditto for any hobbies that he took up. He stole photography equipment, probably because he was a photographer. I think he is an outdoorsman, very skilled at it, very skilled at map-reading, and probably a mountain climber (given his physical description/build/shoulders/legs) and his knot-tying abilities. He probably likes out nature activities, like backpacking.
I think that his parents are probably aged or dead and that he probably received an inheritance. I also think that he was disciplined with money and was taught that from an early age, because he bypassed stacks of cash in peoples' homes and valuables when he could take them.
I think that EAR was highly educated and a "responsible citizen" in his compartmentalized life, including that he's a registered voter.
I think that he owns a home, could be in a relationship/marriage to a completely unsuspecting woman, that his friends and family didn't suspect him of any violent crimes, and that his residence is probably in a trust for tax purposes.
