Forgive me if any of what I’m discussing or asking has been addressed already in publications. I have been lurking this forum since 2014, where I was directed from another site that discussed unsolved crimes. I did purchase Hunting a Psychopath on my phone to read last year, but, oddly enough, my phone was stolen while visiting California and I lost access to the book. Most of my information comes from this forum and sites like Quester’s and Winters’.
In terms of my thoughts on the case, I think the newly developed Alpha Beta supermarket employee/access angle is interesting. I’m also aware of a Golden Bear jacket that could have only been purchased from a small pool of retailers at the time, possibly indicating our POI could have been identified by shop clerks. I can’t recall reading anything about investigating these stores or the link any further, and I know the passing of time means it would be near impossible to find said employees and/or interview them at this point.
It’s my perspective (and I believe, many others’) that someone is/was withholding valuable information leading to the perpetrator. I’ve always believed very strongly that there were far more home invasions and rapes committed than reported, especially in the case of rapes. Based on the lengths he took to instill fear in his rape victims, I would imagine quite a few were too terrified to talk to authorities. Perhaps they disclosed the incident(s) to friends, family, or therapists but were threatened not to speak to police and complied out of this fear.
I know saying “someone knew something” is useless. And I’m aware that there are many trolls who post stories which only further complicate the case by indicating they had a brush with EAR/ONS that can’t be validated. But I do have some questions pertaining to the locals of the EAR/ONS attacks.
1. What is the general attitude towards EAR/ONS in the present-day communities of the vicinities he attacked in? Surely there are long-term residents who would want him identified and have some knowledge of suspicious characters they grew up with or heard about over time? Is there any value in conducting a wide-scale survey for information from affected residents or those who lived through the attacks in these areas today? (I’m well-aware victims and their families do not want to be bothered, but curious about their neighbors and community members’ input.)
2. How do you access yearbooks, news articles and phone book records from that time period? I often hear people discuss these as resources, but am unaware of how to find them. I worked at a college library where we used microfiche for similar materials, but I don’t live in California.
3. Are there any projects in place involving at-home research that I can contribute to? I would love to help, I just don’t know where to start.
