I for one, don't think even went to college, and he may have been a high school dropout.  I don't think he performed very well in school either (I still think he didn't perform well despite whether or not he was intelligent enough to do so in school).

I am with you on that. My main point is that he put so much time into crime-prowling, peeping, breaking/entering, stealing, trespassing, rape, murder...etc..etc.. No telling what other crimes that LE has no idea about. He could have been committing crimes all along with another MO. This guy thought about what he was doing all day with complete obsession. He was 100% criminally intent even when he was at work or at home- his mind was on the next crime. No way that dude had time for school or even relationships while he was committing the crimes. If he did have a female companion, she probably did not question his movements and was very accepting to his lifestyle as she knew it.


I believe that if EAR had a companion, and she was the person in charge, there would have been altercations between them, and she may have spied on his movements and knew what he was doing. If that was the case, there might be a missing woman or women in California that could be traced to being his companion or accidental deaths that could link back to him. He would not have wanted to just kill his companion in the home and have the police ask a million questions. He is the kind of guy who would travel to the Grand Canyon and push her over the side- Oops!- and go back home or move to another town. The dude had issues, and nothing is beyond the scope of imagination.

Many of the areas that he struck are prime fishing spots on the American River. Probably just a coincidence but attack number 21 was a stones throw away (literally) from "Harrington" river access.

I wonder about the possible significance of the American River every time I look at a map of the attack sites.  Fully 17 attacks were near the river (counting Maggiore and Miller), which is yet another thing that seems odd about this case.  A river is a natural barrier that greatly reduces avenues of escape.  With an unlimited number of potential victims in East Sacramento, why take the risk? 

The fishing angle sounds intriguing. Trabuco reminded us recently that there was a severe drought going on in 1976 and parts of the river were practically dry.  But maybe the EAR had fished in those locations in previous years, who knows.

Another thing of note is the way the EAR bounces back and forth across the river. Of the first 20 attacks, he immediately jumped sides in subsequent offenses 15 times.  Occasionally he attacked twice in succession on the North side, but never on the South. Again, that's for the first 20 attacks. The pattern then starts to break up a bit, especially after the EAR expands his territory to Stockton and beyond.

This geographic pattern for the early EAR phase is so strong, it seems as if it were done for an express purpose.  What that purpose might be I don't know.  An offender doesn't have to have a good reason for everything he does.  This could be noting more than a tick, like a baseball player patting his helmet before stepping to the plate. Or maybe there's more to it.

I am convinced the GSK lived very close to one of the early attacks and simply walked the couple of blocks back to his house. I believe he was still living with his parents at the time but could come and go as he pleased like a lot of the teenagers of the time (see goletaguru). This is why I don't think the tax idea mentioned above would work as he probably wasn't paying taxes, at least in the early days. Tracing individuals residing in the area 30+ years ago would be tough, but what seems even tougher is legally getting one's hands on the list! 

If he lived with his parents there would be a number of problems with that

1 How does he get out the house without raising suspicions? some parents are like you can go out but i want you back before school tomorrow

2 Where does he keep his various guns and flashlights that he had without them being discovered?

After I graduated from High school and still living with my parents at 17 years old; I was able to do whatever I wanted. If I had to tell them anything I would say its for a job or whatever.  I had guns and they were in my room that parents did not enter, they had no reason to be inside my room. I worked strange hours at a distributing company, so night work, and it was a shift that changed so being gone at all hours was not uncommon. I lived in Rancho at the time, no I'm not EAR, I am too young.

Actually, they did. Although they didn't know about the plot, obviously. But they were quite aware and worried about their children's delinquency.

When the drought hit in 76 there were places in the American River where you could walk across it. Then the EAR strikes. He is like a bad cop. He is like the most dangerous criminal. He seems both rolled into one considering his knowledge of how crime scenes are investigated. Sorry, the EAR was no kid. Early to mid twenties, possibly older imo. Most likely the same age as his first known victim. Victim #1 was 23.

I recall reading one of Goletaguru's posts in which he said something like think about an older brother.

I remember watching the Forensic Files episode about him. One victim said she was babysitting for a friend.

The house was in a neighborhood where the Mayor lived and perhaps a city councilman. She felt safe.

Parents are frequently in denial. Their children's behaviors might destroy the perfect life they have provided. I've read the books on Columbine, and no one really had a clue of the evil that was about to happen. Their kids may have behaved inappropriately at times or have had awkward behaviors, but they had no idea of the terror about to happen.

He did see to know the American River very well. Another stream he knew well was San Jose Creek. From the banks of the river and up out of the creek bed right into your back yard. Who travels these waterways at night? Careful, don't begin narrowing you selection. He is/was the unsuspected.

I prowled the night on a bicycle as a kid, not the same way he did but I knew the area well and the short cuts etc. I was in the same neighborhoods as him and riding a bike allows a person to go places cars just can't go, a kid knows this.
