This attitude is ripe throughout this board and this thread already. It's also a common thread in every cold case - why weren't we given information?
We are privileged with the amount of info we have in this case, that detectives sacrificed their careers, went against the grain, organised and released large amounts of case info. Much of which would never be released in other cases.
Information control is important in any criminal investigation, what information, when you release, how you release it and how much info you release contributes to the quality of leads it generates, and how far that information disseminates through the public. Too much info, people get information overload, they lose interest and have to identify the most important parts themselves or forget those parts, this is not effective. It is better to isolate the most important information that will generate leads and release it. People have short attention spans and short memories, especially when they don't have an obsessive interest in true crime.
This information may have been buried somewhere in the case files, somebody reviewed it, checked out the dates and felt it was more important than it had previously been given credit - felt it more probable to have been the perp. Or possibly this was a tip from somebody who recently remembered the event or rumour of it, and it wasn't in the files previously. Whatever the reason, LE are releasing it now and making an appeal for information, and they are still doing so with some scepticism that it may not have been the perp.
These are both interesting info releases, I can understand why both may not have been previously released, there are dozens of reasons we cant grasp because we are not qualified, experienced or trained in criminal investigation, or officially involved and briefed on this case. It may have nothing to do with incompetence and everything to do with competence.
Isn't it more productive and interesting to talk about this information, than circlejerk negativity, bashing law enforcement and being ungrateful?
I have no personal position on whether or not the shoulder injured man was EARONS, but there are some damn good reasons it may have been, I am grateful LE are releasing this now and running with it and that they have waited to release it with this fox40 production, which reaches Sac locals, and so far has been damn excellent. Hopefully, somebody from back then remembers the right injured friend or family member and turns in a tip. This new series is winding up to be really exciting, what could be next - and what could be being held out for the CNN exposé which may be targetted at a larger audience and could involve new information regarding SoCal or other areas.
The man fled before deputies could arrive."
Authorities were called. If they did not speak to the staff that suspected him, then it is even that much more damning, especially since they know that two days before he jumped into a steep canal. If they did and withheld that information from the public at the time, I just do not know what to say. That is beyond incompetence. Funny how the only, at least that I am aware of, LEO on this board is dumbfounded as to why this was not released much, much sooner.
