Is it possible that EAR was practicing law in Sacramento during the EAR phase? The reconnaissance involved in the crimes almost precludes someone working regular hours in the courts or an office, but is it possible that he could have been burning the candle at both ends, possibly with the aid of amphetamines, and that could have driven the tracking dogs crazy? I think we tend to assume he was a very young offender at the outset, but maybe he passed the bar exam in the late 60's or early 70's, already lived in or located to Sacramento to practice law, and began the cat burglaries that Detective Holes recently revealed, until he progressed to rape and ultimately murder. It's also possible that through his line of work he became buddies with a loose-lipped officer, prosecutor, or investigator who knew information about the case and that's why he seemed to have insider information that he used to elude LE. Didn't Lyman Smith have connections to Sacramento County? Perhaps EAR met Lyman Smith through professional networks.
I'm just brainstorming outside the box here. I still think construction/real estate/medicine/armed services are better leads. But I would like to hear from people within the legal community how the schedule of a lawyer might fit in with the dates and times of the EAR crimes. How feasible is it that this guy was a lawyer or other professional with a postgraduate degree? Could white collar autonomy in setting hours have aided him in the crime series, or would the hourly demands of such a career decrease the likelihood of this?
Has anyone else pursued a lawyer/legal angle, and if so, are there any significant connections or patterns they found that they wouldn't mind sharing? Thanks.
