I lean towards the mommy crying being legit considering he went off by himself to do it on occasion. Since the episodes occurred in a cluster maybe she did die about then.
A verified psychologist posted last year that he believed EAR was trying to resolve something traumatic from his past. I agree, especially regarding the mommy crying. Years ago I read of a boy who was punished by his mother for normal childhood self-exploration by putting a clothes pin on his penis along with shaming. I would imagine this would create a powerful mix of shame, rage, hatred, and sex. And pain. It wouldn’t surprise me if EAR had some abuse of this type in his childhood (not that I have much sympathy considering his crimes). I think the mommy crying is the key to the why of it all.
That type of smothering incestuous relationship was exactly what I was thinking about, but I had Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” in mind. I’d agree it was fake except for the victims who interpreted it as authentic, but most importantly, his going off by himself to cry on occasion. The desire for privacy reads authentic for me.
