Hey there, just wanted to introduce myself. I grew up in Goleta, in fact only a couple hundred meters from the Queen Anne Crime. Lived in the area from age 5-18 and also attended higher education downtown for my BA in the late 90's. I was born in 66, so no I am not the guy =)
In Goleta we always referred to the perpetrator of the murders as the "Creek Killer", surprised this never stuck. There was a rumour that he only attacked unmarried couples, i think this stemmed from the Offermans. The street i grew up on, on the other side of the street, backed onto the creek and I can remember detectives coming around to tell people to lock their doors and windows
On the early morning of the Offerman murder, I was delivering newspapers at around 4 or 5 am with my Mom (her driving a station wagon) me chucking papers out from the back. We started earlier that morning, and I can't remember if it was because i was covering a friend's route or if we were going on a skit trip to Mammoth. Anyway, we were driving north down Cathedral Oaks to make a right at paseo cameo when my Mother and I saw a white pontiac leaving the road to the Offerman condos. This was reported to the police. I was aged 13 at the time and in the eighth grade.
After starting Dp high the following year, I would say that I turned into somewhat of a degenrate and I had friends in the area who joined that ride, we were essentially latch key kids and most of our group (coined "the red eye gang" by the local Sherrif's) were typical stoner surfer skater kids who didn't attend school as much as we should of. We owned the neighbourhood at night, we rode our bikes everywhere and spent most nights smoking weed down at Mountain View School (which I attended when younger) until at least 11 - 1 am every night -- school nights included; playing Backgammon and listening to AC/DC. We played hide and seek regularly with the local Sheriffs, I think they actually enjoyed it as much as we did. We also knew every trail in the creeks that ran through our neighbourhood we were often under the North Patterson Bridge at night not to mention the drainage ditch (which was called the "ditch" adjacent to the Queen Ann murder attempt. There didn't used to be railing around the edge and we would ride skateboards and bikes in there.
We weren't a part of the Haskell's locals but I can say we scored weed off of Gladsby a few times.
At one stage when I was 15 I lived in that creek just a few meters up from the Cathedral Oaks bridge for about three weeks ( My mom got rid of my Dog) so ran away from Home.
In all of those years riding our bikes around the neighbourhood and the creek we never saw anything or anyone that seemed out of place except once. I was with my best friend and it was about 11 at night we were on the way to my place. There is a steep trail that goes down to the north patterson bridge which hooks up with the trail that goes all the way to the Offermans. A guy was walking his bike up the trail with a dog. He looked to be about 25-28 and he absolutely looked like the guy in the composite sketch with longish blonde hair. We locked eyes for a brief moment, my friend and I said hey and he pretty much just grunted. Further along we both said we wondered it that guy was the creek killer. We never reported this but after reading a few threads here I thought i would bring it up.
I strongly suspect this guy grew up in the area when he was younger, possibly even a foster child, and came back later in life.
Feel free to ask me any questions about my old neighbourhood.
