At this point, I am not saying VR was or wasn't EAR, but after listening to episode 5 of the podcast, I learned some things that I had not read before.
For those folks who are not familiar with the McGowan stakeout, it was where police staked out the area of Visalia where they thought the VR would strike and were correct.
It seems Officer McGowan and an anthropology student who also saw VR describe him has stockier then EAR is described as.
The one thing that stuck me was that, when McGowan shines the flashlight on VR and throughout the chase, VR is speaking/screaming in a high pitched voice. Maybe that was his natural voice. He is described as having feminine features. What condition causes that ? Late puberty ? He is also described as looking (forgive my terminology but I am quoting) Mongoloid. Several times McGowan mentions his high pitched voice. (If VR is EAR, maybe that is why he speaks thru clenched teeth, to disguise his voice and sound more menacing). If VR's voice were really that high pitched, someone should recognize it/him from that time period. Maybe he was slightly retarded/slow but enough to function, and physically agile. Interesting is that McGowan describes him as appearing to be in his 20's. What causes a male to retain a high pitched voice so late in life, or maybe he was really younger.
Also, this case (assuming VR is EAR), was about 1 inch from never happening. McGowan didn't want to shoot what he thought was an unarmed young man, only to have his flashlight shot out. If VR (when he shoots), misses the flashlight and misses McGowan, McGowan's natural instinct would have been to fire (remember, they were only about 5 feet apart), and mostly likely would have hit/killer the VR. Its just too bad he didn't shoot first.
Also, there is a full 6 month gap between this incident and the first EAR rape (Dec to June). Being that the physical description (weight and body type) were different, is it possible that if VR knew he wanted to continue and escalate by moving to a different venue knew he had to be in better physical shape and spent those 6 months doing just that. This is the age where a young man might become self conscious and begin trying to make himself more physically appealing by working out and getting into shape, maybe weight lifting. A young man's body changes a lot at this time (I am talking about age 17-19 or so).
I know the physical descriptions of VR EAR seem to be too different, but at the same time, it looks like the same MO and an escalation in the violence in the crimes which was predicted. It also seems like a pretty big coincidence that one stops and the other begins.
Lastly, some have stated that VR must have been a marksman because he shot out the flashlight, however, apparently they were only 5 feet apart. I wish McGowan had just shot him in the leg.
