Chances are, the badge was dropped like all the other garbage EARONS dropped on streets, sidewalks, yards and roofs. Probably an item he stole from someone else. Something he purloined from another burglary, perhaps one acquired before 1976. God only know when and where that badge originated. He could have lifted it from the library lost and found. A prolific thief like EARONS was probably stealing whatever wasn't bolted down whenever the fancy struck him.
That it was his personal badge is not very likely. That he brought his work badge to a crime scene and dropped it is pretty far-fetched. What would be the point and why would a guy who clearly dressed specifically for his crimes bring part of his WORK UNIFORM to a crime scene? That would be like a prolific teenager rapist leaving behind his McDonald's name tag at a crime scene.
And this guy was a genius, right? That's what so many people say. So why would a prolific genius rapist leave behind a badge if it could lead anyone anywhere? I can see dropping it to mock police, even to make them spin their wheels, but the badge is just a junk adornment from at least forty years ago. They made a bajillion of them. And they aren't linked to specific companies, jobs or people. Not then, not now. Police diligently examined the badge almost fifty years ago and got nowhere. No one now is going to do any better, barring a true blue miracle of miracles, and especially not from a JPEG Internet image.
