Thank you for welcoming me so warmly to this forum. When I came across this discussion, I was amazed to read that after so many years, people still had an interest in figuring out who attacked my brothers and such concern for their wellbeing.

I told to James and Mark about this forum and they were equally amazed!

James still lives in California. He is loving father and husband. He is hard working and very talented. He has played the guitar, drums and sang in various bands over the years. He recently had a wedding anniversary party where he and his many friends played music throughout the night. It was awesome.

Mark lives in Florida with his wife and daughter. He is also a loving father and husband. Mark is a stay-at-home Dad doing the 24 hour/day hard work that all stay-at-home parents do. He also writes poetry and is working to earn his high school diploma.

The attack on them resulted in many challenges growing up and contributed to issues they face to this day. Yet neither one of them has ever lived life as a victim. They are both very kind men who laugh easily. Sometimes… even about the attack.

They are an inspiration to me and a source of strength whenever times are tough.

Thank you all for your concern about James and Mark.  They appreciate it as do I.
Thank you to this forum for being here to help people work together to find the evil people who commit such horrible crimes.

Thanks, Scott, for filling us in on James and Mark. I am so pleased to know that James is doing well, despite the horrors of what he's been through in his life.

Now, if our forum could help give Mark the gift of eyesight by December, that would be truly the best Christmas blessing/gift Mark has ever received!

I am James and Mark Pugliese's younger brother Scott.
I was 3 years old at the time of the attack, so I don't have first-hand information.
However, I recently spoke with James, Mark and our Mom about this attack and the events that took place after the attack...

The composite sketches were based mainly on input from James. However according to our Mom, when James was first able to communicate, he said that they were attacked by two (2) black males. There was a reaction of shock and discomfort by those in the room about any racial element associated with the crime.

Later, when James was asked about the attackers he described them as two (2) white males. And the composite sketches were provided.

After the sketches were published, Mark regained consciousness. When Mark was asked about the attackers, he described them as two (2) black males. He never wavered from his belief but there were no changes to the description of the suspects.

As of last week, Mark still insists that the suspects were two black males.
As of last week, James does not have a confident recollection of the attacker’s description.

Over the years… Mark remembers many other events and to a far greater detail than James or I.

Based on the timing of the attack and the initial description of the attackers by James and Mark, I believe the attacks on them are connected to the attack on Christopher Dragon and/or those suspected to be committed by Joseph C. Brown Jr. and any accomplice of his.
    - It would be helpful to hear from anyone else who was present when James was first able to communicate.
    - It would also be helpful to hear from anyone who understands how a child who just suffered a traumatic event could be influenced by the reaction of authorities and others around them. There needs to be a good understanding of how to best get credible information form a child who has been attacked.

Arlington, I wish I had a time machine. I would want to be there then and be invisible or impossible to hurt or kill. I figure that's about as realistic as a time machine. Anyway, I would make a note of crimes and stop them from happening. I wouldn't worry about changing history other than for the good as I saw it. Maybe I would check years later and make sure the survivors didn't commit a terrible crime themselves. I obviously have a lot of time and imagination but my thoughts come from a good place. And to be honest, I've wanted to live in California since I was little. Evidently, I will only live there if the person I've trusted brings my ashes there.

It would be easy and convenient to assume that Joseph C. Brown Jr. (JCBJ) was also connected to the attack on James and Mark.
However, it would also be unfair to jump to that conclusion considering JCBJ did not receive full due process prior to his own death at a young age.

I'm thinking... perhaps there were other people at the time, besides JCBJ, found guilty murder or attacks that could be connected to the attack on James and Mark.

My questions to the members of the forum...
   - What is the best way to find out who may have convicted of similar crimes that occurred in area in the early '70s?
   - What is the best way to find out what crimes in the area in the early 70's have gone unsolved?
   - Regarding JCBJ... Although not convicted, is there a way to learn why a prosecutor brought charges against JCBJ for the sodomy and murder of young Richard Shifflett?

I was doing some research in the Sac Bee Archive when I saw this story. I went online and found this forum.
Since both boys stated that it was two black men, that stood out to me because there was a story that the neighborhood was considering Joseph C. Brown guilty of the murder of the boy by the swimming pool and they interviewed his "guardian", a brother who lived with him at the same location. The brother spoke about how this "poor boy with cancer" was being persecuted and that he had no one but him to care for him. Then when Brown was arrested it said he was living with a sister and her eight children. I'm wondering is anyone considered the older brother who not only lived with him at the location but was his chief defender at the time. It seems the brother could have been with him the entire time of the attack. There was never a name of the brother in the papers and no information what happened to him after that.

I always knew Duane Lowe was a lousy sheriff, but saying that he refused to investigate the racial aspect of the crime fits right in with him protecting his position as he always did.
Anyway, I joined just to say this and while I am heartened that both boys got to live and grow up it infuriates me that they never got justice.
