Thanks 320, Visalia has always confused me. I understand Beth Snelling ID'd one of those brothers yet, how? She didn't see him. Professor Snelling reported two prowlers that he chased off, one was younger and one was older. Beth saw someone outside her window, I wonder if that is how she ID'd him. Did she see his face at that time or was he wearing a ski mask? If she saw his face, and if there were two prowlers, was he the one that shot her father. A retired LEO told me that he believes the killer of Professor Snelling is not the shooter of McGowen.
I would swear the VR is the EAR yet not everything fits but so much does, and the descriptions cannot be of the same guy unless there were two. Detective Clark mentioned burglaries in Sacramento in 1973 and a few of them seem like the VR, including stealing blue chip stamps, removing women's underwear to another room.
I am supposing that DNA was taken from the W. brothers but that would clear them of being the EAR but not clear them as being the VR, since no DNA was saved in Visalia, right?
Why does he constantly steal these blue chip stamps, was he redeeming them ? For what ? Ski masks ? It just seems like an odd thing to steal. Maybe because it had victims saliva on the back of the stamps if they licked them ?
also, another excellent episode. I am particular impressed and please with the way this series has been organized. Not just a chronological walk thru the crimes, but from 5 different angles.
Here are some notes I have.
It appears that the VR bought things for his mother. You could buy anything if you had enough stamps. An employee at the Visalia Blue Chip Redemption Store stated on or about 0ctober 1973 that a white male, approximately 21 yrs. old 6 ft. tall, 200 lbs, light brown short hair, no glasses, with a very smooth complexion, came into the stamp store and purchased some women's jewelry, earrings and necklace. She stated he entered the store, approached the counter and advised her of the jewelry he requested. He apparently knew which items he wanted prior to coming to the store. She advised that he appeared in her words "weird". He apparently walked about the store, talking to himself and paying no attention to anyone. She stated that in the past two years he has returned to the store on a minimum of 10 times, each time purchasing women's jewelry, earrings, and necklaces. each time he purchased the items he made the comment that the jewelry was for his mother.
"On one occasion, the store did not have in stock the items he requested and she had to place an order for them. She advised the subject that she would call him at his residence when the items arrived. He stated that he did not want his residence contacted.
"He returned to the store on four different occasions to ascertain if the items had arrived. On one occurrence, the subject entered the store in an angry rage stating that he had just drove his vehicle across a concrete curb located in the Blue Chip Stamp Store parking lot and ruined his tire. He threatened to sue the Blue Chip Stamp Company for damages to his vehicle. The last time she could remember the subject being in the store was on or about September 1975. She stated that he was a regular customer who never spent more than four or five books at a time, but over a period of two years has possibly spent sixty to eighty books. The employee stated that she has seen this subject on numerous occasions and will contact the police department if she observes him again. She states that she would be able to recognize him from a photograph. He never came in after the Snelling murder.
