The last time he saw DeAngelo was about a week before the Tuesday arrest. He had come to help his youngest daughter, who lives with her mom, work on her car. The day he was arrested, police cars appeared at Huddle’s house, but the neighbor said she wouldn’t let them in and spent several hours talking to them on the sidewalk. DeAngelo’s eldest daughter and grandson live with him in Citrus Heights.

Everything in this story contradicts previous stories I've read. It was her house where she was living with one daughter. Not his. He has not confessed and has been interviewed "at least once."

Courts have ruled that the release of a suspects confession directly to the public is a violation of his right to a fair trial. The DA can announce in a court hearing that a confession does exist. We may see tomorrow but I am guessing it will be a 5 minute arraignment where bail is discussed and a preliminary hearing date is set. I would think that all the jurisdictions would do a grand jury due to their secrecy. This would also alleviate the DA from having to transport him around the state for the preliminary hearing required in each jurisdiction.

It's strange reach to assume that the wife must have been following these crimes as obsessively as you are forty years later. A lot of those things on your list aren't confirmed or wouldn't come to light for many years. You know that lawyers (even divorce lawyers) aren't psychic crimefighters, right?

On the subject of custody....I would think that they shared custody. California almost never awards sole custody and with her being a Family Law attorney in good standing it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
If they were each as standoffish as their neighbors are saying then it would be perfectly reasonable to assume that one or the other “had custody” of the kids as you would see them outside from time to time and conclude that they “live” there...
My ex husband and I share custody and I’m sure our neighbors never notice when our girls are spending time away from our houses but see them regularly enough to know they live there.

It definitely is not impossible. That's just completely incorrect. BTK's wife had no idea. Carole Hott, John Wayne Gacy's wife, asked about the rotting smell in the basement and then accepted his explanation that the smell was coming from rancid meat – there were bodies rotting in the basement. The Green River Killer's wife was never even suspicious, and he killed around 70 people. So no, it wasn't impossible that she didn't know. In fact, it's very possible. Like I said before, it's not likely to be anyone's first instinct to go "hm, I wonder if my husband is out raping people in the middle of the night?" It's far more likely she suspected he was unfaithful, not a serial rapist.

I'm going on the balance of probability. Its possible the handwriting or voice may not be his therefore that would cancel any suspicion she may have had. Beg to differ on the awareness however. The series of rapes and murders would have been followed intently by the legal fraternity. I get the impression she is being treated with kid gloves by the media including social media simply because she is a lawyer. If that's the attitude by you guys that have been on the board for yonks no wonder you never solved the case.

Who knows how Sharon led her life in the 1970s? She could have been a workaholic, away from home a lot. Her husband was cop, cops have shift hours and frequently have to cover for other cops when they are off work. They were married for 8 years before any children arrived.

Looking at the frequency of offending, it is most prolific during the years he was a cop, and then became less frequent but escalated in violence after he was fired and during the period that the first children arrived. It also moved longer travel distance (even if he had a place to stay in Long Beach).

I have a working colleague who had a husband who was seriously into fishing. He would do overnight fishing and go off on fishing boat tours and sea-angling trips, leaving with his car full of expensive equipment. But he wasn't going anywhere near any water, just straight to the bed of another woman. This went on for 2 years, she trusted him and only found out when he didn't come back one time he finally left her and moved in with the other woman.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that the wife, or any other family member, knew about these crimes. The old man was eccentric and hot-tempered, but it's a far leap to assume he's one of the worst serial rapists/sex offenders in US history. This would also depend on how familiar people close to him with the case. Not everyone in Sacramento has been keeping tabs on this case over the years, so unless she was aware and up to date with the details, she likely wouldn't have connected any of his quirks to what was previously known about the offender.

I'm sure law enforcement will be looking into who knew what. For anyone related to him, this is no doubt a strange and distressing time.

Exactly. Those who can’t believe Sharon didn’t know need to listen to stories like these. My father is a criminal (nothing violent) and he had a type of job where he would be called in at odd times of night. He was actually using some of that time to do/sell drugs and have affairs. My mother never knew.

“It was apparent from the start this was a very unstable household,” he said. “It’s our responsibility as parents to protect our children and I’m glad I did.”

In the 21 years that Huddle has lived on the block, she apparently never talked to neighbors, certainly not about her ex-husband who is accused of murdering 12 people and raping more than 45 women. “No wave, no hello, no nothing,” the neighbor said.

“It makes you wonder whether her behavior was because of him,” the neighbor said.


The neighbor grew up in Carmichael, a prime target of the East Area rapist in the 1970s when the neighbor was a teenager.

“Family and friends were sleeping with guns, locking door and windows, not letting kids go outside and play,” he said. “It was serious stuff and it happened on a regular basis.”

While the idea that he had interactions with a man accused of such a heinous crime spree is shocking, he said that it’s not surprising given what he’s seen from his front door.
