Should have been discharged in Sept of 1968. He’s on the roster for the Piedmont 1968. Came back to port in September after deployment repairing ships in Hawaii, Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan. That would have given him a 4 year enlistment period and he would no longer be draft eligible."While participating in Operation “Sea Dragon” on March 2, 1967, Canberra received two hits from an enemy shore battery. Damage was light and only one sailor was injured, allowing the cruiser to remain on station. Just one month later, she lost her only sailor of the war, when Seaman Doug Hegdahl was accidentally blown overboard by the concussion from one of her 5-inch guns. Recovered by communist forces, Hegdahl was imprisoned in the notorious “Hanoi Hilton” POW camp. His testimony about conditions in the camp provided proof of war crimes committed by the North Vietnamese."
I would guess damage control would be activated on this one occasion. Canberra was also constantly shelling coastal positions using 5 inch and 8 inch guns. I guess it could be enough to trigger PTSD in some cases.
I was wondering when someone would bring up PTSD. I’m surprised I haven’t seen it sooner.
