So, been a while. A lot of new faces in the crowd. That's something.
A cop. A cop in Sacramento. Hmmmm.
For some of us, this is not surprising. Not in the least. Deangelo was a VIP. Some would claim he was "The Unsuspected". The truth, however, is that he should have been seriously investigated in 1979. Lives would have been saved. His stature as a VIP within the LE community protected him from suspicion. Let us ask ourselves a question, "Set against the back drop and within the context of Sacramento in the late '70's, why would a LE officer shoplift dog repellant and a hammer?" What would the answer be? To us with the clarity of retrospect, that answer is glaring and should have been just as obvious to LE at the time.
That Deangelo did not fight his termination, that the All Powerful police union didn't take up his cause, is certainly suggestive. Were there whispers behind the scenes? Was there a tacit agreement? "NOT IN MY TOWN, LEBOWSKI!!", punctuated with flying desk furnishings or coffee cups? Or was Deangelo merely so AFRAID that he tucked tail and ran to safety? One of these two scenarios is undeniably true. At this point we just don't know which. The lone conclusion we can draw from either scenario is also highly suggestive.
While there is reason to celebrate this occasion, let us not forget how these atrocities occurred(over and over) and the circumstances that allowed them to continue. LE is awfully proud of themselves and they haven't exactly been shy in telling us all about their glorious involvement in Deangelo's apprehension. If it is truth that he was found through a DNA database that a family member voluntarily contributed DNA to, the he essentially caught himself. Not one thing LE did in the last 40+ years had any effect. None. They may as well have been twiddling their collective thumbs while turning a blind eye to the obvious suspects among their ranks. The only person who made any tangible contribution to Deangelos capture, the only person who deserved any accolades and face time at the press conference, was Mr. Bruce Harrington. He fought long and hard for justice. The other suurvivors and their family members also deserve the lions share of credit. Some of them we know well. They know who they are and they should know that they are amazing. It is heroism. Real heroism. Immeasurable toughness and tenacity. I can't begin to imagine how incredibly difficult this journey has been for them. How painful it must have been to inhabit that head space day in and day out. To intentionally salt a wound. You all have set the example and led the way.
This thing has been frustratingly, tortuously ironic. Let us address and acknowledge the large animal in the room; EAR/ONS was a cop in Sacramento who was never suspected by Sacramento cops even though he demonstrated behavior on at least one known occasion that was indicative of culpability.
VR and the Maggiores, you say? How so? Without corroborating evidence, even with a confession, we will never know. For PR and political purposes, LE may offer a plea deal that is contingent upon Deangelos admission of guilt for the murders of Snelling and the Maggiores whether he committed them or not. It is downright irresponsible to publicly make those pronouncements at this time.
It is over. I bid a fond farewell to Drifter, Any of N, Murdock, Nick, Bob, Dr. Dougie, the legions of catfish, and so many other terrific people who have been friends of mine. All have been extremely intelligent and rational voices rising over the cacophony of the riotous and incomprehensible.
