I remember reviewing that comment when it was brought up on Reddit, and it stood out to me as being remarkably close and insightful. I understand the criticism that with hindsight bias, we give credit for the parts that are right and excuse the parts that are wrong. But it must be remembered that (1) it is very believable if not likely that he was following coverage of his crimes, here and elsewhere on the web, both for entertainment value and to keep tabs on the progress of the investigation; (2) while commenting obviously exposes himself to greater risk, it would take self control to always remain a bystander/lurker and to not participate at all, and we know self control was not a strength of his; and (3) he made "red herring" statements to victims while in the act, I don't know why people now expect his comments to be 100% accurate, not to mention it would be foolish of him to not throw in a few red herrings. Heck even when I make posts in some other forums, I don't think of them as red herrings, but I will sometimes phrase things in a way to preserve some anonymity/deniability. One example that I know I do is that when talking about work, I will sometimes refer to the "company" I work for rather than the "firm" I work for, when in real life, I never refer to it as a company. That distinction is just irrelevant to the comment I'm making, and I don't see the need to reveal unnecessarily that I work for a law firm. When evaluating whether something is a likely red herring vs. something incorrect that evidences JJD wasn't the author, I would consider whether the statement is material to the point he is trying to make. For example, something like navy vs. army I don't think is material to the point he was making in that comment on the article, if it was him. At the same time, the immaterial comments that are accurate I think are especially telling. In particular, the comment "They may have even been engaged for some time" stood out to me. We now know that to be true, and that is an extraordinarily specific detail that is really entirely unnecessary to the poster's overall point.
