As an attorney I would counsel the Exeter and Auburn police departments to watch what they say as even with the statute of limitations and sovereign immunity issues there will be some destitute next of kin that sees a lawsuit based on failure to supervise or some respondeat superior theory their ticket out of poverty. Every stupid thing they say makes the situation worse. He terminated someone who clearly was off-kilter with an anger management problem and didn’t suspect that someone trying to attack him or his family a few days later could be that same guy? The area was so crime ridden that he just expected this kind of coincidence. As a layman I would say that Mayberry is looking like a competent police force compared to these guys. If you listen to the 12-26-75 podcast and the additional crimes and evidence for why someone in LE was very likely involved (which facts they held back to continue to be able to get information from LE!), you have Tulare county, Sac county, Sac Sherrif, Exeter and Auburn all looking terrible. Throw in the Southern California jurisdictions and you see numerous systemic issues with police and policing brought to light. I mean real fundamental issues such as lack of training, lack of resources, lack of creative thinking, inability to play nicely in the sandbox with other jurisdictions, inability to be self-critical and believe one of their own could be involved, bullying of the press to keep information quiet, keeping public in the dark and using them essentially as bait. I can go on and on. I have deep respect for law enforcement, but that is despite what I know about this case.
I have led numerous audits and post-mortem (bad pun) analyses of major issues in corporate activities and I understand that it’s very easy to assign blame after the fact and to Monday morning quarterback. However, I am lacking words for the failure of these police forces. Look at what just one competent detective (McGowan) was able to accomplish!
I’m sorry if this comes off as a rant but this guy should not be able to whitewash his past failings. I assumed there would be a lot of CYA and “no one could have ever guessed” statements from LE, family, friends and work colleagues but I am also surprised at the level of willful blindness.
I wish I could give this 1000 thumbs ups^
