Family secrets usually are hand in hand with family lies. Sometimes a lie is used to cover up a truth that is very close indeed and can't be explained otherwise.
Sane people trying to rationalize what goes on in a crazy mind.
So, what if the secret really is that Deangelo raped his sister? He was playing house and touching her inappropriately and two airman came by and stopped Deangelo (unless that part is just a throw away lie and there were no airman at all). Wouldn't that make more sense? His father was a big deal on base- a celebrated WW2 bombardier. ...Court martials are also a big deal and much feared- ask Captain Bligh. What are the repercussions of raping the child of a heroic fellow air force officer on that base? Death? This WW2 bomber fighter is going to let 2 lesser ranking (assumed) airman rape a seven year old, his daughter, in front of the 10 year old brother, who witnesses and does not run for help? And in the extended community of this air base, Dad's going to keep that secret to himself, that his 7 year old comes home that night brutally raped by two 27 year old men, who want to rape a seven year old, and do, for some reason, on that base, risking the worst possible military punishment? A SEVEN YEAR OLD? No visit to the hospital? No report to the base commander? No investigation? No court martial?
I don't know if I believe the two children (now adults) when the husband of 26 years never knew a thing. That's very odd. Did a family member put them up to this story to save Constance's brother? The victim is conveniently not around (now deceased) to provide any verification of it and no reports made at the military base? Really? Well, I don't think a man of JJD's father's era or ethnic background would turn the other cheek and fail to protect his daughter's honor or his own and let fellow air force walk all over him.
No, I do not. He raped his sister, if any of this happened at all it was crafted to hide a family secret and protect young JJD. Early indication of who he would become. If one witnesses their sister raped, they become a good cop, protecting others from rapes. JJD appears to idolize his mother, currently he has a large picture of her above his bed, so he doesn't seem to have any issues with how she raised him.
