Haha. Definitely more of an acid Sabbath(Pre-depressing The Wall) Floyd,Grand Funk, Ten Years After andike that kind of guy for sure.

And Bon Scott>>Brian Johnson easily.

Ha,ya see we differ there a little bit,but thats cool,definitely agree with you on the Sabbath though,thats another good one for a poll Ozzy or Dio,but Im pretty sure I know who most people would pick with that one,I liked Ozzy a lot  better in Sabbath then I did in his solo career.

Im going to show my stupidity here,I should just google it,but Im in a hurry.I don't remember what the > means,I don't remember if that's the greater then,or the less then.But Im willing to bet in your case ,it meant the Bon was the greater then the Brian.

My favorite records are all the early ones with the original line-up. I actually saw Sammy Hagar live before I saw Van Halen in concert, I do like Sammy's work quite a bit. He definitely brought something new to the band, they were mixing things up during his tenure moving away from the gritter sound of the early albums. More keyboards, more ballads. I prefer the attitude and tone in Eddie's guitar on the first six records.

It can easily be argued Eddie is one of the most influential guitarists along with Beck, Clapton, Page, Hendrix, Alan Holdsworth. His tone and rhythm guitar playing are amazing. No he's not the cleanest most perfect player. Just listen to some of the isolated guitar tracks on YouTube (I'm the One is a great example) and you can hear it all. On some of those tracks (Hang 'Em High was another) there are no overdubs or punch-ins. It's recorded live in the studio. So much grit and grease, that's the good stuff!!!

Women and Children First is a real sleeper with some awesome jams.

No Bon Scott, no Brian Johnson. I LOVE Brian Johnson's work on Back in Black, but that whole record was a tribute to Bon Scott, basically. Bon Scott's delivery was amazing. There's some live video of them, he was the real deal.

Agree 100% about Michael Anthony getting such a raw deal with Van Halen. Total *s doing what they did to him. He was a key ingredient, essential. Especially his harmony vocals.

One of the few modern VH clips I enjoy, poor Dave accidentally injured himself. Then magic happens, for a few minutes anyhow while they continue the jam anyhow...

I remember liking the first Gamma album that came out in late '79...and although it wasn't classic Montrose with the keyboards and newer technology, it was still Montrose's guitar and good songs. I saw them live NYE '79-'80 and I really liked them even if they did play "Rock Candy" when I didn't want them to....

I haven't heard that album in 25 years at least, but I'm sure it would hold it's own today. Montrose had a great musical life more as a sideman but he was kind of a tragic figure. He's one of those guys that should have made it bigger but didn't and has a residual that people still recognize.

That NYE show I mentioned was Gamma opening for Blue Oyster Cult and both acts were ON and had the crowd spellbound. I remember that well.

In the Bill Graham people's wisdom, SVT ( which was Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane/Starship's foray into punk ) opened that show and they were pelted with liter bottles of soda, hot dogs, burritos, and what looked to be a yellow liquid in an open container. They played for less than ten minutes before "Thank You, Goodnight" rang out. Gamma and that incident will always be etched in my mind from that night.

SVT were kind of like a hippie's idea of what punk rock was. There's all of these book about punk rock posters and San Fran rock scene posters, and so many flyers and posters for SVT were in those books, but I don't know anyone personally who had any of their records, nor do I know of anyone in the scene who had any kind of affection for them. The other, "real" punk bands in SF are all fondly remembered today, but no one ever talks about SVT - probably because some punks regarded them as interlopers. They were doomed because they were too hippie to please punkers and too punk to please hippies. I've heard their music; it's forgettable.

The rest of that show sounds awesome though! That must have been the Cultosaurus Erectus tour...?

In regards to BOC, it was the tour in support of Mirrors and the show date was 12/31/79...I think the tour coinciding with Cultosaurus Erectus was the "Black and Blue" tour with Black Sabbath about a year later.  That was the same tour where Geezer Butler was knocked out on stage by something that was thrown from the audience and they rioted after the show was stopped. Throwing * was big back then...

Yeah, SVT was more of an accommodation by Bill Graham than a popular act. The wisdom of having a pseudo-punk band opening for heavy rock/metal acts on NYE is questionable and they paid the price. In that era of SF punk acts, the Avengers??...yes. The Dead Kennedys??...yes.  SVT?? who??? what??

The Dead Kennedys played at my high school under their "Creamsicles" name that they occasionally used when playing venues that might have "issues"...everything else was the same.  I wasn't a punker, but that was an hilarious show where I got thrown across the room for being too annoying in the mosh pit. That was before "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" came out...which is my all-time favorite album title. If SVT played I'm sure that 1) people wouldn't have come and 2) the people that did come would've left. They were pretty much a non-entity.

Gary Cherrone would've been appalled....

That student who was able to book the DKs show for the high school has had his own talent booking agency in San Francisco for many years. He made a career of it....but that Dead Kennedys booking has gotta be "up there" with the best moments of his career in telling the school administration that the "Creamsicles" would be playing and having Jello Biafra, Klaus Flouride, and East Bay Ray show up.
