Paul Holes believed the EAR kept the fine China set and used it, perhaps even served Turkey on it to his family on Thanksgiving. I think Paul Holes was right.

I'm betting JJD used the lamp inside his storage unit. Closed the door, turned off the storage overhead light and used that lamp for lighting. Then maybe threw a towel or scarf over it the way he used to do at crime scenes on the TVs and lamps.  He may have played the cassette he took from Manuela's answering machine and listened to her voice over and over again while he looked through the photographs he stole, and also handled the other stolen items.

JJD probably has other things in his storage unit that aren't souvenirs.  Such as, original newspaper clippings mentioning his crimes, all the books that have been written about him, magazines with articles about his crimes, etc...

I'm sure he'd have wanted to have all those things kept together in one place, and somewhere none of his kids or other family members or friends could ever see them.

I've been thinking that the storage unit may have been located between his former job and the house he used to live at before he moved to the one he was living in where he was arrested.  Or, nearer to the house he shared with Sharon Huddle right before his crimes moved to SOCal.  Maybe he had driven from SoCal to Sac sometimes with SOCal souvenirs in the trunk of his car. 

1976-1979 he lived in Roseville

1976-1979 he worked for Auburn PD

1979 he was fired from Auburn PD for shoplifting

1980 JJD +  Sharon Huddle bought a house with a VA loan in Sacramento

1981 his first daughter was born in Sacramento

1986 his second daughter was born in Los Angeles

1989 his third daughter was born in Sacramento

1990 started working for Save Mart in Roseville

1992 JJD had an apartment address in Roseville

1992 Sharon Huddle's name was removed from the title of the deed of the house in Sacramento

JJD obviously bounced back to Sac, even after murdering people in SoCal.  It's possible that he never really moved to SoCal.  JJD may have only been there around the times he committed his murders.

In the Witthuhn case, he took the answering machine tape, A lamp from beside her bed, and a crystal paperweight. It is thought that JJD may have used the lamp as the murder weapon.


I'm uncertain whether or not he took any "personal" trophies from Cheri Domingo and Greg Sanchez. However, he did take some of Greg Sanchez' clothing. I believe that it was thought that he left the premises wearing Greg Sanchez's clothing because of the blitz attack that went on inside. His own clothing was possibly torn and/or bloody.

We've never heard of anything that may have been taken from Janelle Cruz. Perhaps her sister, Shelley can answer that more fully.

He did take some of Charlene Smith's personal jewelry. So, he was taking trophies during his ONS phase. 

I sure hope that LE found some of the things he took.

Okay, that now gets me thinking what “trophy-taking” he was doing while in his ONS phase.
Did the nature or amount of those trophies change significantly from his EAR phase?
I was under the impression he was taking few if any items (other than objects that he used as murder weapons) so the crystal paperweight from the Witthuhn attack is news to me.

I'll bet he used what he could in his daily life. He didn't need to hide it away and sneak off to look at it if the stuff was right there to be admired all the time. I wouldn't doubt he gave some jewelry to SH so he could look at it all the time as she wore it.

Quality cutlery is expensive. Not as much as China of course. I've got loads of gold plated fine China and the best crystal etc I eat whatever the hell I want off it and drink out of it everyday no point in it just looking good. I'm thinking the China, cutlery etc he definitely used the China especially. He probably found the China very appealing to use. 

Considering he was known to take other household kitchen items, don't you think he most likely wanted them so as to be able to use those items regularly in his own home yet nothing too conspicuous about them to his company?

He had plenty of time to "shop " in the houses. Even when the victims were home it seems. When they were not there he was still pretty bold. Believe there were a lot more break ins and stolen items never reported. How many times have little things come up missing and we assume they are lost. If it's big or many things that's different.

The EAR was very clever and he hid his identity from everyone for so long. I believe he attacked in areas away from his home and work in order to avoid the possibility of ever being seen around crime areas by anyone who knew him. Also, so his cars wouldn’t be recognized.

JJD may have been renting a storage unit back in 1976/1977. He may have kept his crime tools in it - ski masks, gloves, other clothing, tennis shoes, knives, guns, flashlights, ropes, etc. He may have been going there before attacks and after attacks to change clothes and to drop off his trophies. He would  never have wanted to risk anyone, including his wife, seeing one single incriminating thing. He probably also would have made certain the storage company would not know his true identity, so he may have rented it in another name.

JJD and Sharon lived in Citrus Heights and Roseville when JJD worked for Auburn PD, while he was attacking in the Greater Sac areas. Perhaps JJD rented a storage unit near one of their past residences, between Auburn and either Roseville or Citrus Heights. He may still be renting the same unit after all these years.

I think LE should fax or email inquiries to every single storage unit that has 24/7 access and drive up spaces in those areas.

It may be hard to know if JJD will ever confess, even with incentive. As far as telling LE where his trophies are, I know he will NEVER tell. Firstly, because they’re his special treasures and he doesn’t want anyone else to touch them. Secondly, the items will definitely link him to the crimes.

He stole a fine porcelain chine set from a couple he attacked in Danville.  The whole set was still in quilted cases with zippers. He took the entire set, still in the cases  He took so many different types of things - a large decorative lamp, hair combs and brushes, military knives, hunting knives.  Worst of all, he stole people's dignities and sense of security.
