I've never been on probation so I need to ask:  was his probation, lasting until April 26, 1980, likely supervised, so he needed to check in to the probation office?

I'm mentioning this because there is potential evidence of his whereabouts (partially) in those six months.  It would be in the form of probation office visits, or a record of him informing his probation officer he was leaving the county (and for which other California county and for how long?).  That said, I doubt JDD would feel a need to conform to probation regulations with regard to travel notices.

Is it possible those probation records still exist?

Did the Offerman/Manning attack in Dec. 1979 have DNA evidence (I know the Smith murders in March 1980 did.) If not, the prosecution might need to establish whereabouts for Offerman/Manning (or the defense would be looking to see if any probation data showed he wasn't in SoCal on a particular date.)

The trial was 10/26.  The blotched Goleta attack was 10/1.  JJD wasn’t on probation yet.  

What’s interesting is that JJD stole a bicycle from the garage of a retired probation officer.  The probation officer didn’t know how the bike got taken from his garage. I vaguely recall the probation officer was retired from from Sac, but I could be wrong.  I wonder if they knew each other,

Misdemeanor probation in Sacramento County 1979 was usually just court probation. Not assigned to a P.O. If he violated, then he would be remanded to his full sentence, usually 6 months before in jail. Felony probation back then was quite different.

The BMX Bike and his current use (found at his home) is quite interesting and fits into the scenario of having a primary vehicle such as a van or big rig parked outside his kill zone. Consider how he would set up his escape route from victims homes, he would do the same thing back to his primary vehicle. A vehicle in plain sight that we all see every day at shopping centers or on the side of the road? This all fits my theory of his need to be at retail grocer areas prior and subsequent to attacks. However, peddling and discarding a non traceable bike to aid in his escape. The escape from the FBI Agent is a classic example.
