You also see that "technique" a lot on mainstream "news" message boards; the stream of conversation will be about how bad candidate A is, but some fan of candidate A will interject some unrelated bit about how candidate B is so dreadful, thus trying to change the subject.

Ha, I posted my response before reading yours. Exactly, politicians are always the first people who come to mind. Talking heads on news shows do this a lot, they try to avoid specific responses by throwing out bullshit analogies or cliches. You'll hear economists talk about the economy this way, like it is some conscious organism engaged in behavior humans can relate to through creative metaphor. I got into an argument with a Mormon guy the other day about hallucinations and he started in on me with these absurd Book of Mormon verses that were smokescreens. Dude was so programmed he was sweating through his ill-fitting white dress shirt just trying to hold it all together.
