One thing i never understood about the Zodiac was why he vanished, I can only assume he died.
Here's an extremely egotistical person, he wants recognition and fame he claimed more murders that LE attribute to him so he's driven by ego clearly.
When BTK killed the otara family and two people claimed they did it, BTK wrote a letter explaining things only the killer would know - he didn't want someone else getting the credit for it.
So back to zodiac when ALA was questioned and lead suspect i always wondered why Z never retaliated, I can't imagine Z would want someone else getting the credit for the murders. And it still baffles me we never heard from him again since '74 i think? He literally disappeared.
What id give for them to find out who it is.
Zodiac also went through relatively long periods between his attacks. I think he was probably working full-time, met a woman, and started a relationship after having gained some self-confidence through his fame. He was not super-careful with the Paul Stein murder in how he planned his getaway, but for the most part he was pretty good about not leaving evidence and avoiding detection. I think another reason he stopped altogether was he just didn't want to be caught once he felt he gained enough fame and popularity. He was satisfied to just write letters and falsely claim he was still killing.
To me, that means he was someone who derived satisfaction less from the hunt, but more for the power he felt and with the trouble he gave LE by taunting them and choosing to not let himself be caught once he reached a certain level of success in his mind. This kind of tells me that when he stopped he was in his late 20's to early 30's, which is the age when male brains have stopped growing, testosterone levels have stopped going up, and their lives become more focused on things other than comic books and childhood fantasies. He was obviously quite immature when he first started, but matured enough from the close call after the Stein murder to know that he should chill and cut out the crimes because he would get himself caught.
I do not think he disappeared because he went to prison or was killed. He may have started a new life and decided he was happy with acting out his fantasy of becoming a famous villain, and it was enough. Whoever he is, I don't think he would've wanted to share the spotlight with an accomplice.
What I really want to know about the case is whether his life intersected any of the initial 6 victims before he chose to target them. I wonder if he chose them at random, or if any of them had crossed his path in life and maybe knew him. He targeted the young couples in places he was familiar with, places that were somewhat out of the way to non-locals. I wonder what set him off initially, because at some point he went from someone with fantasies to someone who actually followed through. His early disdain for couples was obviously rooted in some sort of insecurity and failure with women, and he envied the couples, and resented them for enjoying things that couples enjoy, like parking somewhere to be together.
It makes me think he was probably a pushover, didn't do well with the ladies, and wasn't very mature with recognizing how absurd his ideas and values were.
I think they're going to catch him with a decent DNA profile, and he'll turn out to be a loser with grown kids, no wife, no success in his career, living in a relatively crappy pad, who people know as the guy who brags a lot, but is obviously cheap and full of *.
