Sheriff's Department.  The arrest took place in Sacramento County, and the Sheriff's staff informed Nick Willick of the arrest so they knew DeAngelo was a shoplifting cop who acted very strangely when caught.

Chief Willick became Chief in early May, 1979, two months before the arrest.  He didn't hire DeAngelo but he quickly put an end to DeAngelo's six year career in LE.  

The possible Visalia connection for the EAR was reported in an article in the Sacramento Bee and then the theory was quickly disparaged in the same paper by the Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesman.  Why do you continue to think Chief Willick should have thought there was a connection between Tulare County and the EAR when the Sacramento County sheriff clearly didn't?  I think hindsight bias is causing many people to scapegoat a very decent man - Chief Nick Willick.  


I would like to know more about the shoplifting arrest, the investigations by both police agencies, and the trial.  Given what he knew at the time Chief Willick acted reasonably.  All of the conjecture about conspiracies and the blaming of Chief Willick is just bunk, but it keeps the pressure off of the Sacramento County Sheriff, which is a shame.

Cool story. The way you tell it, it may leave the reader thinking that Willick just happened upon JJD and Auburn PD "two months before the arrest" and that "he didn't hire DeAngelo" so the perception is he just got there and was still learning who's who.

Do you also happen to know where Willick was prior to becoming Chief in May 1979?

Nick Willick attended Sierra College, California State University Sacramento, and Golden State University where he did graduate work in business administration.  At the time he became Chief of the Auburn PD he had already served on the force for 8 years, including for over a year as a Lieutenant, a time as a Sergeant, and before that as a patrolman (sources May 2, 1979 article in the Auburn Journal).  He was all of 30 years old when he became police chief. He served as the police chief for decades and also for a few years as City Manager.  Obviously a real dummy (sarcasm).

When DeAngelo served in the Auburn PD,  Willick was his Sergeant, then Lieutenant, and then Chief.  Nick Willick lived in Auburn from grade school onward.

In one of the interviews, it sounds like Willick says or implies that as a sergeant he and JJD were the only two guys on patrol, that when he was a lieutenant JJD didn’t work in Investigations, and it was only after he became Chief that JJD was under him again.

I agree as a Lieutenant Willick wasn't DeAngelo's immediate supervisor, but another article from the Auburn Journal indicated that as Lieutenant he was second in command of the Auburn PD.  Willick was in the chain of command above DeAngelo.  When Willick became the Chief of police the PD had a staff of 23 including dispatchers, officers, and clerical staff.

It would be great to see the entire org chart. Edit: When JJD filled in, as Willick said, it would have been clerical sometimes, Dispatch, etc, but never Investigations, despite JJD having done that before?

I don't have any inside information, just the newspaper articles I can find and the interviews.  I think the Auburn PD may have had interns, like DeAngelo was in Roseville before he got a paying position in Exeter.  It seems like there was completion for patrolman positions so it wasn't hard to find a better replacement for Deangelo.

The articles and interviews I have seen refer to a lot of car chases, so I think the officers mostly patrolled by car.  Sometimes two officers were on duty and patrolled opposite sides of the City.  The city proper is small, but I think they erect also responsible for some rural routes on the outskirts of town too.  When they had parades and special occasions in town they seem to have added extra officers on duty.

On the subject of the personnel file it strikes me that before JJD got probation on the shoplifting charge there would have to be some paperwork done. More than one person passed his case through the system.

My boyfriend's father was a famous sacramento sheriff.

The suspect that was asked to leave town worked in the news media.

Based on what my boyfriend was told by father, there was no le suspect.

There was a reserve that Detective Shelby suspected due to not passing the lie detector test but that was regarding the Early morning rapist. .
