These 2 cases are interesting. MO is different yet there are still similarities. The biggest similarity of course is that they were couples brutally killed in areas known as lover's lanes by either gun shot or knife. Then there's a few other similarities which I've bolded.
In the link of the 1990 Houston murder, it states that the couple's car was found with the keys in the ignition, a cassette tape (it doesn't say if it was playing), and the driver's seat reclined.
In the 2nd case, the murder took place in October. The couple was shot multiple times. No sexual assault. National Forest Land.
1ST CASE

Lover's Lane Murders The 1990 The Lover's Lane murder case is one of the most notorious unsolved homicides in Houston's history, and for good reason.
On August 23, 1990, 22-year-old Cheryl Henry and her 21-year-old boyfriend, Andy Atkinson, headed out for the night and didn't return. They were found brutally murdered the next day in an undeveloped, wooded area in West Houston that had been dubbed "Lover's Lane" for its reputation as a make-out spot.
The couple was not found in their car, but in the woods nearby. Cheryl had been raped and then killed. Her throat was slashed, and the killer had covered her naked body up with boards.
Andy was found tied to a tree, his throat also slashed. Reports say he was nearly decapitated. At the crime scene, police say they found a golf club lying in a field, along with three golf balls, one lined up after the other. They pointed the way to Cheryl's body. There were also four partially deflated balloons found tied to the tree above Cheryl's body, and a crisp $20 bill was lying next to her.
According to Gary Atkinson, Andy's father, investigators told him that they believe Andy let the killer tie him to a tree. They also know that Cheryl was killed first, which means Andy was forced to listen to her scream, but was unable to help.
There has been some progress on the case in recent years. The Harris County Sheriff's Department says it has linked the grisly murders to another unsolved rape and burglary that was committed months before the Lover's Lane murders, but the case remains unsolved.
2ND CASE
BUMBLE BEE, AZ - It was Friday, October 17, 2003, when 20-year-old Brandon Rumbaugh and his girlfriend Lisa Gurrieri, 19, took an overnight trip to a campsite near Bumble Bee, Arizona to lay out under the stars and celebrate their 1-year dating anniversary.
When Brandon did not show up for work the next day, the families became concerned and headed out there to search for the couple.
The couple was found dead together in the bed of the truck.
It was Sunday afternoon when three family friends located the white Ford F-150 pickup truck they had borrowed from Lisa's mother. The couple was found dead together in the bed of the truck. The friends went to the Sunset Point rest area and contacted authorities. The medical examiner would later determine that each was shot multiple times in the head. Whoever shot and killed the couple escaped into the 90-thousand acres of national forest land.
"They were great kids and great together" Family members spoke of the two as "the perfect couple," saying "they were great kids and great together."
Lisa was an employee at Salt River Project and a member of her church band, while Brandon worked as a fitness trainer in Mesa.
For a week the Yavapai County Sheriff's office looked for an investigative lead. After finding a person of interest, they said he cooperated fully with investigators and was not a suspect in the case.
