When I first got the internet, Tom Voigt's site was one of the first places I visited, being interested in Z for so long; I read it nearly every day, hoping for updates. For years.
And then Tom latched on to Dick Gaikowski and though I tried giving Gaik a chance as a Z suspect, there just seemed to be nothing about him that screamed, "THIS IS THE GUY." Voigt's interest in Gaik seemed to grounded mostly in Voigt's utter cluelessness in reading the contours, warps, and woofs of the 60s counterculture. Through 2008-2010 he kept pushing reprints of old "Good Times" articles on the forum and pointing to insignificant details as red flags. It was like he'd never even seen a documentary on the 60s before; my father and mother were both student radicals in the 60, and I was brought up in that kind of atmosphere, so every time Tom would bring something sinister-seeming up from that era it was like watching an alien trying to understand human behavior. He just didn't get it.
Plus, Blaine/Goldcatcher is your main source of info?! A homeless crazy person? If Blaine told Tom to wrap his head in tinfoil, would Tom have have dutifully followed direction?
That was totally disillusioning and so I stayed away from his site for a few years and developed other interests in the True Crime sphere, like EAR.
I still have my VHS copy of the compilation of Z-related video footage that Tom sent to me in 2002. I wish he hadn't gotten sidetracked by Gaik, because in my eyes - and in the eyes of a lot of other Z sleuths I've talked to - TOm and his site lost a lot of credibility when he hitched his entire operation to that particular wagon.
But what made it so much worse was when Tom would get super-piisssyy at his own forum members if they'd deviate from the "Gaik is Z" gospel, or if they'd try to explain that, hey, that one ad in the back of that one issue of Good Times doesn't mean what you think it means, Tom. He seemed to get angrier and much more arrogant during that 2008-2010 period when he just seemed to be addicted to proselytizing the Gospel of Gaik. He brooked no doubters. That was a mistake.
I still have no earthly idea why he went so hard down that road. He just put on blinders and charged straight into a wall. So many other interesting suspects could have been occupying the real estate Gaik took up during that time.
I still go to his site every few days or so just to see if there are any new DNA developments or new interesting suspects, but I stay away from the Gaik section of the site. He used to have the absolute BEST Z site imaginable, but he squandered its credibility and potential to chase the ghost of a hippie.
Lol he just said a psychic on a tv show said that Z is gaikowski. All finished there, case solved. lol
