Re the cigarettes. If they did belong to the killer/killers this is something that makes me think there was more than one person involved in this. Initially I thought the killer had a cigarette because he was so arrogant and had the guts to stand around and enjoy a cigarette after what he had done - a reward to themselves so to speak. But taking the time to smoke several cigarettes next to a car with the murdered victims in it is a bit of risk to take. Now I am wondering if it was two people calming their nerves after the car wouldn’t go on fire and trying to figure out what to do next as the original plan hadn’t worked. Would one person be capable of pushing the car or would you need two? I have no idea why I think this but it has crossed my mind this could be the work of two young people-just something about the cigarettes made me think that.
I know very little about DNA/forensics but I wonder if the authorities kept the cigarettes as evidence, would they be useful now?
I sure hope that those cigarettes were kept and that they've been analyzed for the DNA.
I think it would totally have been possible for a man to have pushed a small car over that overlook. In fact, I think that if it had been more than 1 person, the car could possibly have been pushed faster, making it go farther down the slope, despite the growth that blocked the car.
Note: I would have thought that Cathy and Becky were killed where the car was found, except it's thought that the car was moved. If by "moved" investigators mean pushed over the overlook, I'd believe that they were killed at that Overlook.
Good point Fossil about the car going further if two people had pushed it.
If they were killed at the overlook surely there would have been more of a mess left behind. Even if it did rain it would have to have been a lot to get rid of all traces. Does anyone know how much it rained? I had read an article from The Daily Press that same week that said it had been an exceptionally dry September and October in that area. I just think it is far too big a risk to have committed the crime at the overlook which is quite open and near the road. I think they were killed somewhere more private. It’s also true though that even if they were killed somewhere else it would have been brave to drive a long distance with two bodies in the car, I think the murders must have taken place near by. Dumping the car at the overlook was done to intentionally separate the scene of the crime from where the bodies where found. Fewer clues = less chance of getting caught.
