I think the picture shows a cabinet being covered with a blanket.  I don't think it's a television set.

I speculate that Mr. Cruel covered the cabinet with a blanket so he didn't have to move the potentially identifiable personal items from the top of it.

If this was the case, then perhaps Mr. Cruel had an eagle-eyed wife who might have noticed if family photos or ornaments were removed and then replaced.  Easier to just cover the whole cabinet with a blanket...

I would also suggest that Mr. Cruel may have been an avid cleaner/housekeeper in his personal life as well as in his crimes. OCD cleanliness. The sort of guy who could deep clean the house without his wife thinking 'why did he clean the house, what has he been up to?' 

I'm thinking Mrs. Cruel would always return from visiting her parents for a week or two, to find the house as sparkling clean as when she left it.

When I was a kid I was never covering the tv, I was watching it.  Sounds like you did this a lot.  Why?  I guess I could see it for a romantic mood and for whatever reason jjd was doing.  Do other people do this?  Maybe a east sac thing?  Covering lights I can see I guess but tvs?  Was there a Hitchcock movie where it was done?  Maybe Rear Window?  It seems like I have seen it somewhere.

I didn’t think either it was a common trait covering the tv. I’ve always thought he did this mainly to minimise the lightning being seen from the outside.
If blinds or curtains are closed , you can still see a frame of light when the main light is on from outside the house .
Less so with a table lamp , even less if any with just tv on possibly when lighting changes as programme proceeds , zero chance with a static set tv with a cover over it.

It could also be a paranoia aspect I’ve heard of long term coke users paranoid of police raids keeping TVs low and lightning low this could easily fall into ridiculously light diffusing . I think he definitely did some drugs at some stage possibly at least LSD after Vietnam.
Or he could have learnt it from his early teens where hopefully this horrendous story doesn’t begin, unfortunately I think he was evolving from the moment he was racing up and down the road in a Dodge Charger.

I also consider the possibility that the light was so someone else could watch. Maybe he just wanted to see the victim better but maybe someone else wanted to watch. I know that sounds odd but I think it is possible.

Thanks for clarifying. Must have been misreported as I got the info from this news clip , they also said he had a tip missing from a ring finger and not an index.Maybe was a similar vehicle he practiced driving around before the navy .

If you have a VPN and can watch the Australian Crime Stories episode about the case, the first attack they talk about is almost text book EAR. Granted it was a home with more family members than you might expect but outside of that detail, I think the public deserves to know why they discounted the connection after they announced publicly they were looking into it.

Serial offenders tend to overlap in terms of MO, so it makes sense that the MO of home invading predators like JJD and Mr Cruel would overlap, in my untrained opinion.

The similarities between the EAR/ONS cases and the Mr. Cruel cases are not remarkable.

No serious investigators believe these crimes were committed by one person.

Mr. Cruel's MO has many startling differences from JJD's MOs.

That both guys ate food and spent time with their victims --

Both have been seen in crimes committed in thousands of sexual assault cases.

There are far more differences than there are similarities. A classic example of people over-emphasizing coincidences while ignoring differences and things that don't match.
