I think your speculation is wandering in the correct direction. I've never been convinced that anyone accompanied him.

However, since the arrest, scraps of information about his personal life have been written about. I do believe someone in his life had some degree of knowledge very early on, even in the VR days, of what he was up too. Perhaps they looked the other way, perhaps they were excited by it, perhaps the relationship was so weird, so perverse that they simply had to accept his actions.

I have trouble envisioning what I believe is the truth. It's too disturbing. But some level of knowledge existed with someone.

I'd guess either being told about the murders or figuring out he was a murderer was a bridge too far and most, at least many  aspects of this relationship was then ended. 

The china set was an odd thing to steal. Under normal conditions I'd postulate that being a cop he knew where to fence things, be they china, trading stamps, camera equipment.

But the china falls under a more domestic umbrella along with the canned food and suitcases to hold the cans in. Canned food? T-shirts? Pajamas? Who the heck steals stuff like THAT? Sounds like a guy fixated on his cozy home life if you ask me. Just saying.

So yea, all speculation on my part too ... but there's more to this story.

There's definitely a lot more and ,unfortunately,I don't think we will get answers.
They have EAR/ONS/GSK alive and in custody.
I think the powers that be are happy to say "case closed" and move forward.
All the niggling little details that we have obsessed over for years don't matter to them sadly and most likely won't get answered.

I get, in the grand scheme of things,finding out if JJD ever brought a dog to a break in or ever went to an open house don't have any bearing on either a confession or guilty verdict but ,damn, I will go to my grave with unanswered questions.
