From what we know of the local LE at this time, this crime was not considered related to other crimes in the area. And they definitely weren't linked to the earons crimes, because even if they knew about them, those serial crimes did not include murder.
When LE came on the Offerman/Manning crime scene, which looked mainly like an assassination of two people, they probably initially thought this was a murder by an angry husband or ex-. Or a planned robbery & murder by someone one or both of them knew.
But I cant put anything past LE in the 70s, though. In Sacramento, the LE spokesman basically dared ears to assault even more people, and also to go after men; by belaboring the point that he only went after solo women, they were heavily implying that he was a coward. They knew well that he was a serial offender at this point, so no doubt they could also guess that saying what they did might embolden him. Which, as we know, it did.
As someone said above, a 'homosexual assault' on Dr Offerman has been debunked by LE and should thoroughly be put to rest.
The obvious conclusion LE came to, is sound. Offerman was shot at the point that he had loosened the binding on his hands, no doubt when earons was sacking the house or stuffing his pig face in the other rooms. When earons came back into the bedroom, Offerman may have been lunging toward him, or jumping out of the way of ears gun, or just falling off the bed because he wasnt fully untied.
Offerman fell in a manner that supported all these theories, without having to concoct an even more salacious story. Also, I've been told that when you are shot through with a gun, you do not fall backward, like in the movies. You fall down and frontward, which Offerman did.
I dont know who this Tim person is, but if he relayed this stupid myth as fact, then he does not have an inside track, period. He doesn't even know the basic facts, or he's shining his listeners on.
