Yes, he had a Failure to Appear.  He went to Sacramento to stay with a retired S.B. sheriff's officer that I was told owed Brett's dad who operated a card room $10,000.  Brett was to do roofing up there.  I think the cop and a partner renovated homes.  Sacramento is very hot and roofing is a very hot and dirty job.  So I guess being on a roof in Sacramento was not for Brett and he returned to Santa Barbara within a week or two.  Brett went to Sacramento with another boy and I don't know who that was or anything about him.  I wish I did!  Brett's parents apparently contacted the sheriff's that Brett wanted to turn himself in and wanted to get a lawyer and they thought the Sheriff's were cool with that but I guess not because they went out and arrested Brett on a construction job site.  Brett's family were upset about that.  Anyway, long way to say yes and he stayed there very briefly.

                         GSK known to do surveillance from rooftops -- maybe he was comfortable up there. . .and maybe GSK was too HOT in Sac. too!

                         This bit about a retired "S.B. sheriff's officer who owed Brett's dad $10,000" sure gets my hackles up somehow. . .

Roofing angle: tar found on twine? shoelace? at O/M crime scene. I might not have this straight but I think the tar was used to bind the end of the twine and to keep it from fraying. Was the tar from: beach tar? Lots of beach tar at Coal Oil Point and in general in the ocean and there is the Haskull's Locals surfing connection, Brett was a surfer etc., roofing tar?, tar from climbing phone poles?

Thank you very much for relating all this information Sandia. A lot of this stuff I have never heard before. Have you ever asked Poole if Brett's brother listened to the '911 call' or the 'Is Ray There?' message to see if he would recognize the voice as a possible friend or associate of Brett or himself?

You are very welcome tma, but no I have not had the opportunity to talk to Pool since he retired.  The recordings came out after  my last communication with him in Dec. 2012. 

I actually do have a contact who is friends with Brett's brother.  He might not want to bring this up to him though, but I hope he will be willing to do that.  It doesn't hurt for me to ask him to and for all I know they both may have already heard it.     I will contact him.

Thank you PC.  It's funny though I was told by someone who has close LE connections that the family did live there at the time of the murders. 

However, what the son of the rumored owner of the dog told me jibes with what you say and he said they moved out 4 years before the murders.   Taking into consideration that O/M took place at the very end of 1979 that could mean they moved out in 1975 or 1976.  He told me that LE went to the neighbors and warned the neighbors when the Glasby's moved in that they did break-in's.  The Glasby's moved in 10/14/76.    He stated that he was a young child, around 10 years old, and was scared.  So that means they had to have been living there up until at least 10/14/76.   So 4 years seems a bit off. 

The son also said they never owned a 3 toed white German Shepherd.  He said they only owned small dogs but another family down the road with the same last name?? may have owned such a dog.  The same last name?  That last name is not too common, a little distinctive and well known in Santa Barbara.

Now I am rereading what Investigator Pool sent to me (copied and pasted below)   . There has been confusion with the dog situation. Paw prints from a dog were on the O/M patio (3 toed prints I believe, how do they know it was a German Shepherd, how do they know it was white?)  Turkey bones lead to speculation that the dog was fed on the patio.  (Of course we know EAR/ONS was known to eat)  Couple of thoughts/rhetorical questions:  How could he bring a dog to a murder scene, no barking was heard with the gun shots, how could he sneak in with a dog that might make noise?.  How could he know the dog would not bark?  If he had to run, LE could follow the dog home if he lived in the area too.  I can completely understand bringing a dog while doing surveillance as an excuse to be out walking in the neighborhood, but cannot understand how someone could bring the dog to the actual crime.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT QUESTION: Where was the dog when:

1) pg. 445 Sudden Terror  "One neighbor stated he saw a man standing behind a large tree at approximately 9:45 p.m. the night of the murder"

2) pg. 445    "Another neighbor stated that he and his wife were walking in the neighborhood at approximately 10:00 p.m. when they saw a man following them.  At one point he was approximately six to ten feet behind them.  The subject was young, five foot eleven inches tall, slender, with blond neck length hair.
Additional question.  Was there a sketch from these three witnesses and which one is it if there is.


SEPARATE INCIDENT  was the dog stabbing incident 7/13/81. A man walking his dog reported that his dog ran off and into a yard and came back badly bleeding. He knocked on a door and asked to use the phone.  Returned with a rose he left on the door step to thank them for letting him use the phone.  I always knew that EAR/ONS would not show his face to a neighbor and come back with a rose to thank them.   I know who this man was, initials G.T. and G.T. didn't know he was of interest and some long time later, probably after Sudden Terror came out went to LE and said it was him.   He was interviewed and completely cleared and has nothing to do with the crime, just that his dog was probably stabbed by the EAR/ONS. Now I am including an answer from Inv. Pool to me below. In it he says the dog appears to be a red herring BUT.... is he referring just to the G.T. dog stabbing, or is he referring to the dog situation in general, the 3 toed dog at O/M, etc.  or again, just to the dog stabbing incident.  (By the way the dog' s guts were hanging way out of it's belly and it was a horrible wound, the dog survived. 

Another dog situation: There was dog blood found on the foot bridge over the creek next to S/D.

From Inv. Pool to me:

"The German Shepherd component of our series appears to have been adequately addressed. I identified the owner of the German Shepherd many years ago and also the subject who had been walking the dog through the Goleta neighborhood. I interviewed him and obtained DNA (Eliminated) and believe we have a pretty good idea of how a dog appears to have become a component of the series. The dog seems to have been a bit of a ‘red herring.”

So he interviewed the owner of the German Shepherd (the neighbor of Glasby I believe, the older well respected, well known man in the community) and G.T. who was walking his dog when it got stabbed.  O.K. G.T.'s incident means the dog encountered EAR/ONS in a back yard probably.  So the older man who's son says he didn't own the dog was cleared.  So why is that a red herring now.  I do not get it and now since Inv. Pool has retired I can no longer contact him.

No, the rumored owner had definitely moved to Hope Ranch prior to the Goleta attacks. I think it was 1977, but I'm going from memory on the date and not notes at the moment. They did live next to Glasby's house on Camino Rio Verde prior to moving to Hope Ranch.

The stabbed dog (the one stabbed in the backyard) is a different dog and family and they did not live next to Glasby. I don't know which family/dog Pool meant as being cleared and a red herring. I was told that the stabbed dog's owner was cleared and also the guy walking it the night came forward and was cleared. I think there may be some crossed wires about which dog/which family was meant.

There was also another family with the same last name (pronounced the same, spelled slightly different) in the neighborhood that the son of Woofy's rumored owner was probably referring to as the family down the street. I can't remember for sure if they lived there at the time of the attacks and would have to check notes.

Cheri's daughter, Deb, said LE was asking her about the dog as late as 2006 or so - 35 years later. So, the dog was still an issue.

2nd hand info coming from some neighbors after the Domingo/Sanchez murders is that the bloody dog footprints found on the sidewalk was not dog blood and was human blood and indicated the dog had been in contact with the victim's blood somehow. They claim they were told that by LE asking around about the dog. Possibly hold back info by LE? I don't know.

Yes I will look. I do remember that when Crompton did receive a call in the early am about a rape he would inquire "Dogs have been dispatched?" But I will look for a reference.

I think we need to re-evalauate which German Shepherd EAR was grooming for his nocturnal activities.  The dog prior to HH was stabbed on Berkeley Road on 9/25/1979.  This is consistent with EAR or another prowler being in the vicinity and trying to eliminate a hindrance.

There was very clearly a reason why someone was releasing this German Shepherd constantly.  There is also a reason why Berkely Rd was a hotbed of EAR activity.  I am completely convinced that board myth and legend perpetuated identification of the wrong dog and how the dog was being used.  Jigs has uncovered something very significant.

I will look up those posts again and do recall that they were incredibly interesting.  jigs is the greatest!  One that stood out to me is the Hanna Drive.  That is where one of the 5 burglaries the night of O/M took place.  Is this a separate incident?

Also the unleashing of the dog stand out.  What can that be about?

Who knows for sure whose dog it was, except for GSK. I don't think it can be conclusively said to be a red herring about the former Glasby's neighbor's dog. It could simply be that LE didn't see a connection and they aren't exactly batting 1000 in this case.

Do you mean Sandia?  I am not Port but wish I had her info not to mention her brain!  There were a few sightings.  The night of O/M there were 5 burglaries.  At 6:45 p.m. 12/29/79 a girl living on Queen Ann saw a white male appearing to ring the doorbell of her next door neighbor  and again saw the same male apparently ringing the doorbell of the same neighbor at 7:30 p.m.  The neighbor later discovered he had been the victim of a burglary between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. This was not necessarily the EAR/ONS though.

I did mean Sandia, 99.  Apologies--long day.  Spending most of it reading the "Mr. Y" Folder.
