investigators think
4. As for hiking five miles to their car. I presume you are referring to the girl's walking to where their car was found? I have speculated that their car was parked in the small parking lot that the dispatcher dropped them off at. If so, I suspect the killer drove their car to where it was found. Of course, this is just my speculation. Do you know if their car keys were recovered? And, do you know if either of the girls were barefoot?
K: Their car was not at that small parking lot, which is the Stony Man Nature Trail. They parked it at Pinnacles, and there is no evidence it was ever moved until after their bodies were found. I have a list of everything that was recovered at the site and will confirm whether or not the keys were included. Both women were completely naked.
K: According to this dispatcher, the women had their backpacks and Taj and spent the duration of the truck ride debating where to spend the night. The dispatcher also says that they had yet to make a firm decision when she dropped them off. I find the place where they were dropped off very odd, particularly given that they were so close to Skyland.
It’s worth noting that the dispatcher is one of the few people involved in this case who has not responded to my requests for an interview. It’s also worth noting that her husband was one of the first rangers on the crime scene. He, too, has not responded to my requests for interviews. Both told a third source, a retired investigator, that it’s because they are still employed by the park service.
K: Yes. Of particular interest initially were four rangers who worked on the Colonial Parkway in 1986. Two of these rangers were given polygraphs. One passed; the other failed. The FBI also had a warrant to search the home and vehicle of the individual who failed the polygraph, and he was initially considered a suspect. He was eventually cleared. They also considered employees of Skyland. I think this is a good lead to pursue further. The ranger who patrolled the Bridle Trail said that it was virtually unused, save for Skyland employees who would go back there to party.
The ME couldn't positively pin down an exact date of death. What if the girls were held captive at their camp site for a day or two before being killed?
Regarding why they asked to be dropped off at that spot, I suspect the girls asked the dispatcher to drop them off there because their car was parked there.
