There are so many things that conflict with him.  small, smooth hands versus rough hands and calloused thumbs.  Of course I wonder about that because he always wore gloves.  Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe they ever got a fingerprint from him....and he had the top part of finger missing that I'm sure he wouldn't want a victim to see or feel and then report.  Then I made a list of legs and arms descriptions including hair.  It ran from victim #1 stating he didn't have much leg hair to victim #4 saying he had lots of "lighter Hair on his legs, to #7 saying heavy black hair on legs and arms and #15 saying course stubble on his legs. (Course stubble I think might indicate that he had shaved it so as to be able to go as fast as possible on a bike). 

Then we had military bearing on #3 but #7 states he was possibly bow legged or slouched.  #7 also said he had lots of black hair on arms and legs and was either bow legged or slouched and he walked funny.  #7  makes me suspect it could be a different rapist.  However, I'm sure LE is looking at lots of things in their decision to say it was the EAR or not.  But I do wonder if a few that are listed could have been a different rapist. The other thing is that descriptions of people seen in the neighborhood could be the problem, some could have been from innocent people in the neighborhood or even different prowlers.

I am thinking possibly all the bike riding could have made his regular sized legs very strong and couple that with not being a heavy person, it could have made it so he could easily spring those fences.  I did see a skinny teen walking down the street suddenly jump a fence with ease and of course you know the first thing I thought of.  Yet DeAngelo was in his 30's.  Wow, gotta wonder.

I'd be willing to wager that the mustache became "a thing" for him following the Maggiore shootings.  Prior to that, I don't recall an instance in which EAR victims described their attacker as having a mustache.

mf73, That was my first thought.  Did he grow the mustache after the Maggiore murders but no, that sketch that came out with the two guys walking together, one of them with a mustache strangely looked like DeAngelo.  It wasn't, the guy was cleared and they know who he is.  But the picture in the paper actually looked like DeAngelo with the mustache, so that should have made him want to shave it off.  Of course shaving it off would probably not have been a wise thing to do because that could look even more suspicious.  Honestly this case has me whip sawing all over the place.

I believe blue chip stamps were going out by the time he moved to Auburn but while in Visalia, he was big on stealing them.  The blue chip stamp lady, Garnita Hickman, in Visalia said that a suspicious guy that was always angry and talking to himself came in and bought jewelry with them that he said was for his mother.  I can't be sure, but I'd think she would have mentioned if he traded the stamps for wigs.  He was a prolific burglar but I didn't hear any mention of wigs being stolen from his break-in's.  The 12-26-75 podcasters published a list of things stolen iirc.

FWIW I also have trouble reconciling so many inconsistencies with DeAngelo and after the thread about the incredible, uncanny number and nature of some of the coincidences with this case, it is hard to fathom but magic of some sort did abound, for many years.

Here’s a link to an article about cyclists’ legs — albeit, extreme, Tour de France cyclists’ legs. Cyclists legs can be quite thin and can look so when covered by trousers but feel hard and muscular.

I do recall hearing comments from someone about shaving their legs for an upcoming race and they were amateurs.  I would think that someone that might think they'd have to outrun the cops on his stolen bike might think to shave his legs and it appears he did because victim #15 reported course stubble on the legs.

Also, if he had built up bulgy quads and calf muscles from riding a bicycle a lot over years the muscles could vary a lot depending on how much riding/running/jumping he had done that night. They could be pumped-up or — if he had taken a relaxed cab ride in from his EARplane — maybe not as much.

Sure! He was an expert at diversion and false flags. Remember he had a B.S. in Criminal Justice and most likely
had sharpened his skills in Visilia. Could of worn a wig he stole and actually grew a mustache then shaved it and wore a phony one. Yes. He was that clever. He was a master burglar before anything. Once the cops were settled on late teens early twenties as profile, he most likely stayed with that profile. Like dropping the eyeglasses when he was the Cordova Meadows cat burglar, this was a perfect diversion. Detective Ken Clark spent hundreds of hours on that set of eyeglasses that led to nothing. The Special officer badge, the bike stolen in upper California all demonstrated his skill at Diversion. Including the remarks he made to Victim Jane Carlson.

This guy was skilled in trace evidence. When DNA was recognized as viable in the late eighties, mabe he decided on a different path? I believe he wore different sizes of shoes(bigger) with numerous socks to confuse the cops. Numerous tricks he learned from education, training and experience all came into play.

Leading questions from the cops posed to victims helped him elude capture for so many years. This guy left so many diversions it crazy. I believe recently he favored his motorbike to troll former victims hidden by a helmit etc. Note the observations his housekeeper described of the trinkets he put out?

This will come out at the Preliminary Hearing hopefully before the year is over.

i agree with dougguard as this is the most common sense explanation of how DeAngelo was able to go undetected and remain free all those years.
I also believe DeAngelo was the Zodiac killer’s apprentice. A crazy, whacko theory yes, nonetheless it is one I’m not yet willing to let go of.

It appears to me he must have been wearing wigs since his own hair was as Chief Willick pointed out, very short and balding.  The victims never really saw his hair though because he wore ski masks etc.  but one puzzling report is that the couple on Queen Ann, Goleta, that escaped stated they saw dark hair with curly ends sticking out above the collar.  So apparently he let it grow longer after he was fired.    Anyway I 100% agree with wigs.

"and actually grew a mustache then shaved it and wore a phony one."  The mustache is what I'm pointing out.  Nobody ever mentioned a mustache.  He had one in the Auburn PD picture, it wasn't fake it was real.  He had attacked shortly before and shortly after that picture.  No woman mentioned feeling a mustache, nobody ever mentioned seeing one.   Let's say he wore it only briefly, still he  My question is how long did he wear a mustache, it wasn't fake, and when did he shave it off.  The picture in the paper was in the June 8, 1979 edition so the picture was probably taken a day or two before.  He had attacked on June 2 just a couple of days before the picture.  He attacked on June 11, just a few days after.  

That incident with the eyeglasses, it's funny that guy is 73 and still doesn't wear glasses.  He must need them at least for reading.  Yes, the poor cops and all the false leads that creep make them follow.  You are right he threw out false clues and leads all the time, so much so it he said he was going to go north, I'd look south and know that the one direction he was not going was north.  Did the cops have to look for vans by the river just in case he was telling the truth or did they also put no weight into those statements?

The shoes, the one constant was that the same size shoe was found everywhere and they were kind of small for a man.

The housekeeper, some people do not believe her.  I don't know if she is telling the truth but I believed her.  But then again, I can't see DeAngelo leaving newspaper articles with pictures of women that had been murdered and leave the jewelry out for her to see.

99, I agree--one of the most bizarre aspects of this case are the two sketches generated immediately following the Maggiore murders in early 78--where it gets really unnerving, in my view, is that both sketches ("Baby Face" and "Mustache Pete") bear eerie similarities to joey, but I believe "Baby Face" is on the money--in particular, the hair with the part is reminiscent of that crappy combover he favored as per the 73 Exeter P.D. photo; this guy's thatch started thinning early, and then when that's coupled with the lantern-like jaw/lower facial structure, and the eyes--wide yet slightly sleeping looking--damn if isn't nearly a dead ringer for a balding, 32/33 year old joey circa 78-79.

He could've had that mustache for quite some time without victims (especially) knowing it; he attacked from the shadows, and he always had his face concealed.  Perhaps he started the mustache as a simple deflection--after all, the EAR was supposedly just some punk kid with a precocious knack for hardcore criminality.

I think its important to keep in mind that until Summer of 79, he was surrounded by cops in his life. He most definitely had to create situations to avoid suspicions from those around him. In Visilia and Auburn! Have you ever worked with cops? I have! Cops by their very nature are peering, nosey, prying people. They gossip like old ladies, they know your business, your family divorce etc. He had to use his skill on duty just as intensely as when he was trolling for victims. You can surmise on the how and when and still be off?

JJD was a square aloof peg living in a world of round hole people. It was his second nature to be constantly aware and sensitive to any suspicion and a ready-made diversion or escape. This also included his wife, siblings, inlaws, and of course the cops he worked with. The wiry long haired persona helped him considerably in Sacramento when like most military veterans, he looked older than he was.

We must also consider he fluctuated in his crimes. Burglaries in Cordova Meadows in 71-73 hot and cold. Then Visalia-Tulare County both hot and cold and finally with the attempted kidnapping(daughter) and murder of Claude Snelling in late 75. More burglaries than sex crimes. He shot a city Detective in Visilia in 75 but upon returning to Sacramento, he mostly confined his crimes to Sheriff territory.

I appreciate your posts and the work done dicovering the information that they present. With all due respect to your research, I trust my memory of my experience over what you have in your notes regarding whether or not the EAR sexually assaulted “little boys”. I’ve stated that he did.

I’ve recently spent a solid week or so trying to convince myself of the possibility that the ‘pull down your pants bicycle club’ guy that I have described wasn’t JJD but I couldn’t do it — it keeps being him. It wouldn’t make any difference to me who he was but I believe that it was JJD and therefore, pending the outcome of a trial, the EAR.

As photos came out I identified the guy I encountered as JJD by the shape of head, jawline,cheek bones and nose.
I spent at least thirty minutes with him when he wasn’t wearing a mask and hadn’t surprised me from a dead sleep and wasn’t blinding me with the beam from a Kel-Lite shined in my eyes. I referred to this incident again in response to the question about the moustache JJD had at the time. The moustache that the guy I encountered had looked rather thin like one a teenager with precocious facial hair growth might have. I think that encounter that I’m describing probably occurred in early spring and the moustache seen in the ‘baseball photo’ shows it after a month or so of growth from the time that I saw it.

At the time I had puzzled over the age of this guy. He was on a kid’s bike talking to kids about doing kids’ things. I had decided, from my kid’s perspective, that he must have been 19 years old— probably because if he had been any older he wouldn’t have been a “kid” and that would have been just wEARd.

I couldn’t fit him into any of the categories that I had in my mind to define the types of older kids that I might encounter. He didn’t look like the continuation high school dropouts or even the jocks that I usually had to be careful of. I remember thinking that he reminded me of a young airman that my father was hanging out with at the time who had a haircut and whispy looking moustache like this guy had. It turns out that what he looked like was a baby faced cop on a kids’ bike who was out prowling along the American River and along the back fences of the homes along Ambassador drive.

I think that it would have been difficult for me not to have encountered him as I was spending most of my free time out there in those days where I believe the EAR was focusing his prowling at the time. I saw him again months later crashing through the poison oak on his bicycle. I think that if this guy was only a pedophile who was out looking for children to molest he would’ve been somewhere else where children were like the Cordova swimming pools. There were no kids out there but me and the occasional friend or cousin who I had brought along. He was out there behaving like the EAR at a time when a lot of activity that I think was EAR related was going on in my neighborhood.

I appreciate the opportunity to share this. I think that I’m pretty over it now. I hope that by the time that more information comes out about the EAR I won’t care.

I remember thinking that he reminded me of a young airman that my father was hanging out with at the time who had a haircut and whispy looking moustache like this guy had. It turns out that what he looked like was a baby faced cop on a kids’ bike who was out prowling along the American River and along the back fences of the homes along Ambassador drive.

I think that it would have been difficult for me not to have encountered him as I was spending most of my free time out there in those days where I believe the EAR was focusing his prowling at the time. I saw him again months later crashing through the poison oak on his bicycle. I think that if this guy was only a pedophile who was out looking for children to molest he would’ve been somewhere else where children were like the Cordova swimming pools. There were no kids out there but me and the occasional friend or cousin who I had brought along. He was out there behaving like the EAR at a time when a lot of activity that I think was EAR related was going on in my neighborhood.

I appreciate the opportunity to share this. I think that I’m pretty over it now. I hope that by the time that more information comes out about the EAR I won’t care.

Hello steelbike,  I wouldn't expect you to ever put that experience behind you!  I am not in LE, just a private citizen interested in this case, so please don't let my opinions have any influence over you.  I think what I had in mind was that someone in some interview, (I can't recall if it was a profiler like Leslie D'Ambrosia or Mary Ellen O'Toole, or who it was) but they specified that DeAngelo wouldn't fit the category of child molester because he didn't concentrate on children.  But I'm with you, whether he concentrated exclusively on children or not, if he molested and/or raped a child then in my book he's a child molester/rapist.  I can only think that there are criminals that don't always fit the known patterns.  However, of his known crimes, he didn't bother the children of the house.  He locked them in the bathroom, he tied up the 3 year old son of Jane Carson Sandler, the closest he got was asking one child, iirc she was 5 years old, if she'd like to watch!  She ignored him and went back to bed, thank God.  He didn't attack her but what would have happened if she went with him.  It gives me the chills.  Could have been a very close call for that little girl.  Next about little boys, well, we haven't heard of any little boys being bothered by him but that doesn't mean he didn't.  It is a possibility there are many crimes we are not aware of.  He did take some boys with him to the pond to float little boats he made but I haven't heard of any incidents, but I probably wouldn't know about them if they were reported.  Probably a lot of things are going to be coming out in the future we don't know about.  Another thing, children often don't tell until many many years later.  Maybe things are going to come out.  But as of now, I haven't heard of anything involving children that wasn't in the books.

Anyway, I don't know.  I would definitely encourage you to report this to Detective Clark at the Sacramento Sheriff's office.  If you say you recognize him, he might be very interested. even though it doesn't fit with his known MO.  Detective Clark seems to be a really good detective and open minded.
