Watched this video on youtube that outlines DeAngelo's crimes. Among the comments below the video was this tantalising post. The poster's name on youtube is "King of Nerdzz". Could be an informed troll post of course. Then again...
This is a link to the video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aF77K6QgnIE
This is a copy 'n' paste of King of Nerdzz's post.
"This case will bother me to my grave because I might have been of some help in solving it, but I couldn't remember his name.
I was working as a security guard in the early to mid 80's. One night I was assigned to take over at a sprawling motel called the Holiday Inn on 47th Ave. in South Sacramento. I worked one graveyard shift with the guy who'd been working there before me. That was Joe. Nobody liked him there, except for the chef, who was a fellow Viet Nam vet with PTSD problems. I later learned that the female employees had been complaining about what a creep he was. That's why he was being transferred to Lone Star Industries, a quarry on White Rock Road in Rancho, where he'd have limited contact with clients. He seemed to be alright with this arrangement.
We spent that night together, just walking & talking. Mostly about fishing. We seemed to get along at first. At one point he asked me to look after the chef, & told me about his emotional problems. Which I was happy to do. He mentioned his time in the Navy, where he'd injured his hand. He didn't go into much detail or tell me much about himself, but I think he might have mentioned his commuting from Auburn.
What came next is the only reason I remembered that night. We were sitting in his station wagon, drinking coffee when I mentioned my obsession with the unsolved Zodiac mystery. California's own Jack The Ripper. He didn't think much of the Zodiac. He said the guy didn't deserve his rep. Joe paused & deliberated over his next words. I think we both regretted his decision to take the conversation in a much darker direction.
He looked at me & asked if I remembered the EAR. That gave me shivers. I wondered why he'd bring that guy up. "That was a scary guy," I said. I'd been following the news reports at the time, but had lost track due to the demands of high school. I said that EAR was a very prolific, but just seemed to stop suddenly. He asked me what I thought might have happened to him. I guessed that the guy might be dead, or in prison on other charged. He seemed amused. He told me that he knew who EAR was. That he'd travelled to Southern Calif. That he was now killing his victims. That he had a much higher kill-count than Zodiac & Jack combined. This stunned me. I began to wonder about the guy sitting next to me. He picked up on this & started to exaplain away his statements to me. He claimed that he was acquainted with EAR because he, himself, had been a suspect, but was cleared by a blood test. He hated cops & wouldn't tip them off because they'd treated him harshly under interrogation.
I mentioned EAR's small dick & suggested that might be why he hated women so much. He shook his head & dismissed such claims as no more than the police playing head-games with this guy in the hopes of tripping him up.
I wondered if I might be in danger at this point, but reasoned that it would be highly unlikely that EAR would still be in Sac working as a motel rent-a-cop. I decided that Joe was probably just a BSer, like so many other creeps I worked with.
He could read me like a book & seemed to relax a bit. We were both happy to change the subject. He showed my a gun he kept under the seat. He removed the clip & ejected the round before handing it to me for closer inspection. Like an idiot I put my fingerprints all over it. We went back to talking about fishing, guns & other stuff. I noticed that his car looked lived in & wondered it he might be sleeping in it.
I never saw him again. I pushed this night to the back of my mind until I learned about the DNA connection to the ONS. By then I'd forgotten his name & face. I've been racking my brain for that until his capture. No thanks to me. It's a terrible thing to live with."
