Still have never met anyone who heard of one of my favorite movies Local Hero.
It's quirky and understated and very charming and immensely funny. I originally watched it because Pete Riegert was the star and I'd try anything one of the Animal House cast was in. It also has the aurora borealis and possibly a mermaid too mixed into the clash of cultures. An almost perfect little film.
Riegert made 2 movies that fit this thread, this plus Crossing Delancy. Also, the co-star of Local Hero is Burt Lancaster. I know he was a famous movie star from long ago, but I've only seen him in 3 movies from the tail end of his career, this and another under-the-radar movie Atlantic City, (+ Field of Dreams, which is only under the radar if you died before 1989).
I guess that makes 3 under the radar for my 1st contribution lol:
Local Hero (1983)
www.imdb.com/title/tt0085859/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_17
Crossing Delancey (1988)
www.imdb.com/title/tt0094921/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_67
Atlantic City (1980)
www.imdb.com/title/tt0080388/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_22
And, of course, I also love "Crossing Delancey". I was just on Google Street View last week, looking at the location of the pickle shop which only recently stopped being a long-time pickle shop. I like to find locations for my favorite movies/books, and there are sites that post those locations, with pictures and everything. Along those lines, I love the book "Watership Down" and like to look at the locations on Maps/Earth as well. I will probably never be able to travel there, but I can at least get close by using Street View, which was invented specifically for me.
I also like to watch a "little" movie called "Enchanted April" which is a chick-flick, but it invokes the same sort of warm feelings as "Local Hero" and "Crossing Delancey".
Another movie that isn't well-known but is funnier than s**t is "Living in Oblivion" with Steve Buscemi, Catherine Keener, Dermot Mulroney and the previously unknown Peter Dinklage. An independent movie about making an independent movie. Not to everyone's taste as I've found after recommending it, but one of my favorites.
