I worked at Pay n Save Citrus Heights from 1979 thru 81-82. In this particular incident my minds eye memory does not kick in until a little later on but I can speculate what happened up to where it does come back to me. I recall one day coming into work and them telling me someone needed help with a shoplifter. I believe this was probably that time. I have no recall of following this guy or a take down of this guy. So this is my best guess.
I went back to where we took shop lifters and have some recollection of a struggle in there but not sure if that memory is of a different incident or not. For whatever reason they decided to take this guy upstairs. This is where I start remembering. About 3-4 of us where trying to get this fool up a set of stairs that had a switchback halfway through and a very narrow stairwell and a major battle to get him up there. We drug him back to an empty office up there that we had never used before or since. This office was empty, no desks nothing. It had one small window in it.One of those about 16” wide and 24, may be 36” tall. It slid left to right so even if one side of the window was removed you still only had about 6-7 “ to try to get out of. This window was half way up the wall of a second story so pretty high off the ground. My next memory is of us downstairs in our break room probably telling stories about what just happened when from the sales floor we hear this major Crash,Boom,Bang and all kinds of commotion. We ran out on the floor and see this guy heading towards the side/back door. The lumber dept loading area. Out the door he went. I think about 4 of us took off after him. He crossed the road that went behind the store and headed out into the big open field. Its nowPet Smart and had Sunrise golf course there for years but is torn down with new building going on there now. We are running parallel with sunrise Blvd north bound. I look back and see we are down to 3 of us. The important thing is that(I don’t remember his name) was right there with me.He was about 19-20 yrs old 5-8 or so probably 200 lbs solid, build like the stereotypical brick* house. I did not like this guy cuz he was just mean with very few good qualities but glad to have him there then. I would have stopped long before if he weren’t there. Seems like we ran for miles. I can recall the perp being so tired he would stop and walk occasionally and we did the same. I see this big chain link fence up ahead that cut the field in half and realized the confrontation was about to happen. There was no way he was going to make it over that fence.i know there was no way way I was going to be able to. I pulled up running ,my buddy was still there but the third guy had dropped off. I remember hoping he would be able to make it over the fence cuz I was more then ready to call this off. He hit the fence and I don’t remember a big struggle on his part getting up. He straddled the fence and sat there. We kind of just stopped. I figured he was resting and waiting for us to come over to him before he jumped down and took off again.
I see there is a car driving out a gravel road on the other side of the fence. Turns out this chain link fence (both sides of this road) was a road out to a power station from Sunrise Blvd. He had no where to go and he just sat there. The car came from our store and it was 2 of our guys. They came up helped the guy down and into the car. Told us to come on over. I said no way I’m getting over that fence I’ll walk back.
Got back maybe half hour later and I stuck my head in the regular shoplifting room. The sheriffs were there and all under control. Thumbs up they didn’t need us and other then having a story to tell it was over.
Fast forward to 4-24-18 and I see they caught the East Area rapist. Im 64 now and closer to the age they all thought EAR was at that time. We now know he’s 10 years older. At that time they did not publicize the attacks. Once they finally did tell us I could see the attacks were scattered all around me. The first composites came out, one looked exactly like me. The long chin guy that came out at the same time I worked with(at least he looked like him).So having lived in the area my whole life you think you know everyone I was sure I would know this guy once caught.
Back in the day we had cartoons that would have a “kissing bandit” in them.Specifically recall a Flintstones episode where this masked man broke in at night kissed Wilma on the lips and put a rose on the pillow and quietly left. When she woke up in the morning she clutched the rose and swooned. That combined with the then stories of this guy leaping tall buildings in a single bound along other super human tricks he became sort of infamous. They were not telling us of how terrible the attacks were.
Now they have caught him and I’m reading anything I can about this and get to the part of him being caught shop lifting at pay n save in 79 and what a fool he made of him self. OMG! .....
I start hyperventilating and shaking on the spot. I know who to call. My best buddy to this very day was there and one of the four that headed out the door with us. He was the first to drop off because he had recently had knee surgery and was not healthy yet. (That’s where he and I met and have been life long friends ever since.) I called him knowing he’d know the date by virtue of his knee surgery. No answer so left a message saying check your email ASAP! I’m sending you something. I typed up the email with way more detail then he needed because I was cc’ing my brother and daughter and wanted to explained to them in detail. I ended it with something like, so if that was July of 79 Dude we chased the EAR and someone who they are calling the Golden State Killer now. Still freaking out I hear from brother and daughter and tell them as soon as I hear from Rob I’ll let them know.
He calls me back and says, of course I remember that but.......No it was not EAR, My buddy had not gotten back to work from his operation until August of 79 and it had to be a few months after that for him to have been able to run as far as he did. He did remind me that at that same time they told us of a shoplifter they had a few months prior that had made a fool of himself and he turned out to be a cop. Yes I definitely remember that story now.
Let brother and daughter know and brother said don’t let facts get in the way of a good story.Tell them it was him, I’ll never throw you under the bus.
It’s been real slow on the board lately so I thought a fun story might fit here. Get us talking again?
