I'm confused. I thought California did NOT have the death penalty.
Under Californians legal system, far more convicts receive the death penalty than will ever be executed. Convicts with a death sentence hanging over their head are housed in special units call Death Row. This section is under very restricted control where convicts have very limited access to visitors and little day to day contact with other prisoners. They spend most of their time confined to their cells with no opportunities to work, attend classes or participate in the kind of activities that make incarceration somewhat bearable. The leading causes of death of Death Row inmates in California is natural causes and suicide rather than execution. The principle reason prisoners accepts plea bargains for “life without parole” so to avoided the death penalty is not fear of “ the needle” but fear of the dreary death row existence.
If I understand it correctly, there MUST be a trial if the death penalty is on the table. I think that is what he wants to avoid primarily. But not wanting to be on death row could also be a big factor, however I heard he was terrified of being in prison where some inmate could make a name for himself by taking him out, ala what happened to Dahmer perhaps. So maybe he would feel safer not mixed in with the general population and on death row.
I wish I could site cases I've seen on various real crime t.v. shows where after the death penalty has been taken off the table the killer plays games and "tries" to show where he put the body but oh my, he can't find the right place, sorry! , or "forgets" things. I've been incredibly frustrated with this stuff. I want a trial.
I want him to sit with his big ugly skeletor face being shown to the world and witnesses telling all about him and what he's done. If he wants to talk, let it be on the stand but he won't talk. Four reasons...his three daughters and his granddaughter.
