JJD is a creepy, manipulative person who would probably like to control what happens to him, instead of having the justice system control him. All true.

But he was a huge, fat guy before he was arrested. Now he's a thin, drawn guy. But he's not starving to death.

If he dies in custody -- there's a lot better chance it will because he contracts a disease. Currently a real possibility.

Or, he'll have a stroke or heart attack. Or be diagnosed with a malignancy.

It's pretty obvious that one way or the other, he's going to die in custody.

Not everyone is saying he is starving himself. In fact, I agree with Paulie’s take at least as much as I do him trying to starve himself to death.

If you don’t think he looks “frail,” I don’t know what to tell you. Whether you or anyone else gives a crap is irrelevant. While he may have been a huge, fat guy years ago (the DMV pic), that’s far from an accurate description of his condition upon arrest.

According to some, he was riding his motorcycle 100 mph in and out of traffic. 

And ya, unless he escapes (losing enough weight to squeeze between the bars theory 🙄) or has the best defense team in the history of mankind, his dying in custody is pretty obvious.

Those court order would be public record. It wouldn't be a secret.

So unless he's starving himself so slowly that medical professionals cannot detect it....

He's not attempting self-starvation.

He's an old man who's never taken care of himself, who's long had a terrible diet and appears to have possibly been alcoholic.

He's going to look pretty bad.

And yet he was able to scale walls and fences with ease and run like a track star to evade capture? Not to mention riding a bicycle and motorcycle (at 100 mph no less!) shortly before his arrest.

Forget all those previous suggestions for who should play him if a movie is ever made. Apparently, Jan Michael Vincent (World’s Greatest Athlete) or Robert Redford (The Natural) are the only logical choices.

You may very well be right.  Weight loss could be because he's traumatized from the unexpected turn his life took and if so that coward can at least get a minuscule taste of the trauma he caused his victims.  He would have gotten away with his crimes if it weren't for Larry Crompton keeping the boxes of EAR evidence, for the Ventura lab (wish I could remember the name of the person who made an extra copy of the DNA and preserved it) and for Paul Holes  using his detective and his scientific talents to track him down with the new DNA technique, hero's all.   


You said:  "He knew he didn't commit any other crimes (that we know of) so his DNA wouldn't be in the system to be matched to the EAR/ONS DNA recovered."  That is a good point.  Many of us are wondering if he was responsible for other crimes after Janelle Cruz.  Many profilers believe these cretins can't stop.  Of course Dennis Rader proved that wrong.  In 1986 is when DNA was first used in police work and I have no doubt whatsoever that he knew that.  So it could very well be that he did stop his fiendish murdering in 1986.  

Your comments on the things he no longer will be able to enjoy are making me feel very happy.  There has to be some sort of justice!  It bugs me though  that he was able to live the life of Riley for so many years.

I tend to agree with Paulie, though, about JJD. I think Weinstein is using the walker as a prop - and not depriving himself of food. DeAngelo, on the other hand, has lost a very significant amount of weight. I’m guessing that part of it is intentional but that some of it is attributable to the factors Paulie noted.

He apparently rammed his head into a wall after being taken into custody and was on suicide watch. Being heavily medicated would easily explain the wheelchair during the first court appearance. If that was nothing but a ploy by him and/or the defense team, wouldn’t they have continued using it? The ensuing court appearances in those first few months, he looked alert and mobile. Since then, he has lost a very noticeable amount of weight with each passing appearance. It’s possible he’s playing up the mouth-breathing now, but you can’t fake extreme weight loss and frailty.

Agreed!  I just am not sure what I think though.  That monster is very tricky and he's smart.  I wouldn't put it past him for one second that he's trying to feign mental and physical fraility.  Whether it's true in his case I don't know.  I do not trust the snake! so I'm not buying it easily.  Yes, he tried to commit suicide by ramming his head into the wall when first brought in.  What poetic justice, he tried to bludgeon himself and didn't succeed.  I hope it hurt, like hell!  And gave him an inkling of what he did to his victims.  But the idea that he tried to kill himself and is on suicide watch is what makes me wonder if he tried to kill himself by starving himself but the coward couldn't do it.   I agree with you  on Weinstein.  They both have to be traumatized, I don't see why one would be more traumatized than the other though. Weinstein has been taken to the emergency room for his heart twice.  I wonder if that was legit.

While none of us will probably ever know what is going through his mind, I’m guessing that the truth lies somewhere between the two extremes. It would seem to be human nature to present oneself, under the circumstances, as old, feeble, and somehow worthy of pity. By the same token, I think Paulie’s theory was very well thought-out and makes a lot of sense. As far as him literally trying to starve himself, I would think it’s more a combination of what Paulie said and JJD thinking and willing himself to die (and limiting his food intake) before this would go to trial. Just my opinion - and a guess at that - possibly JJD thinking he was in the clear after all these years, plus the gory details of what he has been charged being exposed to the world, was more of a shock to him than Weinstein’s arrest since that was in the public eye for a while and less of a surprise.

Cheryl, intentions do matter because we are discussing what accounts for his weight loss.  I don't know any more than anyone else here but it's just one possibility that he tried that route and couldn't carry it out.   To starve oneself to the bitter end is something I don't think many could actually carry out. I agree with the comparison Otis 1 made between Bobby Sands and the 9 other brave and selfless Irishmen and this sniveling coward of a murderer.  I think of how he cowered and cried and begged McGowen "Oh, God, don't hurt me"while simultaneously reaching with his other hand for the gun in his pocket and attempted to murder the man he was begging for mercy.     

It could be a combination of things.

I hope he lives a very long and miserable life in his cage but I think you are right about his health prospects.

Yes, agree, he's going to die in custody now the thing is will there be one super trial, different trials in different jurisdictions, will his attempt to plead guilty be accepted, will he die before trial, will we ever hear witnesses and get answers we all want.

I think maybe he needs glasses. He squints at the judge and this makes him look disoriented or half-crazy. I agree with those that say he lost weight because he can't get his favorite foods there in the jail. Outside of that, any speculation about his health is just speculation----he might be dying of cancer or he might be in fine shape for his age. Nobody can tell just from looking at a video.

Also we don't know what kinds of psychiatric or other drugs they have him on (if any).
