I listened to Morf's podcast, Criminology, where he interviewed James Huddle. I've always wondered what brought DeAngelo to the various So. Cal locations especially Goleta. I've always thought he killed Eva Taylor. I have a theory as to why. Something James Huddle said on the program caught my attention.
I noticed that Mr. Huddle said he thought that the Interstate 5 wasn't completely open yet. He speculated that DeAngelo probably took the 101 from Citrus Heights to Long Beach which would bring him through Contra Costa County, Santa Barbara and Ventura. He thinks the reason he came to Goleta and Ventura is because they were near the freeway he traveled past. He stated that the Interstate 5 was not completely finished yet.
Well, the Interstate 5 existed from July 1, 1964. It was completed October 12, 1979. It was completely finished by the time of the Offerman/Manning murders on Dec. 30, 1979. And by the time of H/H, it was about a week from being finished probably a little detour but not enough to warrant going the 101 which would add about two hours to the drive time.
However, I believe James Huddle’s main point was that there was a vast amount of nothingness along the I 5 whereas along the 101 he traveled through target rich environments including Contra Costa County. The thing about Contra Costa County though is that DeAngelo was still working as a cop in Auburn during the Contra Costa attacks and in fact during all of the Northern California attacks, so Contra Costa County really doesn’t factor in, only Goleta and Ventura do.
I think the reason for the murders in Goleta was revenge. Revenge on Sheriff John Carpenter. Sheriff Carpenter, a very long term and popular sheriff, ended up living in the middle of a circle of 5 unsolved murders.
As Larry Crompton and Kim Stewart discussed on Episode 3 of “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” Santa Barbara has been the sticking point in this case. They lied to Larry Crompton and when eventually confronted, they said it was because of Reagan’s ranch which is 30 minutes away.
I don’t believe that.
I believe they were protecting Sheriff Carpenter from being badly embarrassed. He had an unsolved murder practically in his back yard…..Eva Taylor lived on 5328 Parejo. Her back fence was next to the back fences of University Drive. Sheriff Carpenter lived at 5347 University Drive, 4 houses away from and behind Eva AND there was an easement that started at Patterson and dog legged onto University right on the property line of Sheriff Carpenter. It's been encroached on now but I imagine in 1974 it wasn't.
Also he ended up having the Sanchez/Domingo (.4 miles away) and Offerman/Manning murders (.5 miles away) but on the opposite side of his house and in the same neighborhood. He was in the middle of a circle of unsolved murders.
Why do I believe DeAngelo killed Eva Taylor? Eva Taylor, a sleeping woman, was bludgeoned to death in her sleep in that neighborhood and there was evidence of eating/cooking in the kitchen. Nothing of value taken just a few souvenirs of no value.
My theory is that DeAngelo applied to be a sheriff in Santa Barbara County, and was rejected. I think perhaps he failed their psychological exam. Bonnie broke up with him because he had a hard time passing “Abnormal Psychology” in college (I wonder why, she said sarcastically.) He badgered Bonnie to help him cheat and that was the final straw, so she broke up with him.
Did he tell Sharon they would be moving to Santa Barbara and he was going to get hired as a sheriff’s deputy there? Did being rejected embarrass him in front of Sharon? Was it the sheriff’s fault and not his?
Did he blame others for his own shortcomings? Well, yes he did! He has admitted to wanting to kill Chief Willick for firing him in Auburn. So he didn't blame himself for shoplifting, as if a criminal cop should not be fired. No! It’s the chief’s fault. He admitted to going out to kill the chief.
My theory is that he tried to embarrass Sheriff Carpenter. Eva was killed April 1974, in November of that same year in Exeter Jennifer Armour was found murdered in the Friant Canal. Her bra was wrapped around one wrist indicating her hands had been tied with her own bra. DeAngelo used a bra to tie victim #1's ankles in Rancho Cordova. He used a bra to stuff in the mouth of a teen age victim also. Another thing that reminds me of Jennifer Armour is that he told one rape victim "How'd you like to be in the river?" Will we ever get answers to these and so many other things.
